Logging Night Time Question

Well, I'm trying to catch up on many months of logbook entries. A typical flight for me is about 7-8 hours, with probably at least half the time at night (on the eastbound legs). I'm crossing many time zones and don't normally hack the clock when I think it's the end of civil twilight. So are there any programs out there where you can type in your departure and arrival times and airports and have it figure out your "night" time?

How do you guys keep track of it?

More carefully than you ;) Sorry, I couldn't resist.

To answer your original question, I'm not aware of any programs that can calculate it like you need to.

However, unless you're trying to build time for a specific requirement of some sort down the road, night time doesn't matter much. I'd put in a "best estimate" and call it good. Nobody will know, or care, if you're a few hours off.

In the future, I'd make a note on your scratchpad of the time you cross in to darkness. That's an easy and simple way of being able to figure it at the end of each flight.

Garmin 296 and up keeps track of your flight time including night time. Then you simply USB it into your logbook every 3 to 6 months.

Make a best guess. No one cares that much.

Log Ten Pro from Coradine Aviation allows you to plug in your local out and in times (or you can set it to UCT time) and it will automatically know when sunset was and fill in night time when it is appropriate. It knows your time zone from your departure and arrival airport. It's an awesome program!

I quit logging night.

If I still flew small planes at night, I'd log that for currency though.
