Logging Dual Given?

Just wondering how many people log Dual Given when doing FTD/SIM training with their students?

I would definitlely have to say no on that one. Maybe unless its a certain type of sim. Level D maybe?

I haven't looked up for FARs for clarification, but it is my understanding that unless it is a level D, you cannot log dual given, but rather just FTD time.

It's another grey area, I've heard a million different stories about this.

I log it as Dual Given, but not in an airplane and not as flight time. It is time spent as an instructor. Just think of it the same way you log ground instruction given

I do, but it doesn't go into any column that counts flight time.

Agree on it not going into flight time. Some CFIs like to keep count of how much dual given they accomplish, aircraft or sim, so it boils down to personal preference, IMO.

[/ QUOTE ]Sorry. Personally, I think the term "grey" is overused (to me it means "not clear" not "people disagree about it even though it is clear"), but that's my problem, not yours.

But I don't think you can legitimately call something grey without first looking it up and deciding that the FAR doesn't make it clear.

Yep, i'm with Mark and MikeD on this one. Personal pref for sure and my preference is to log it. I personally wanna see how much dual given I have down the road. And there is absolutely nothing wrong about doing so as long as its logged correctly.

By the way, what does IMO mean? Probably been asked before, but I can't seem to think of it.

In my opinion.

I do not.

However, a lead flight instructor insits that it is ok because the flight instructor is acting as a "required crew member." That seems logical, but something just doesnt seem right...

Required crew member.......... in a sim?

What kind of drugs is he using?

Here's the way I look at it: does the student log it as sim time in his log book? I would hope so. I'd say log it as dual given (you're instructing, and you gotta endorse something since it's at the very least ground training) and sim time. However, keep it FAR FAR away from total time.

I have no FAR to back me up on this (to lazy to look it up right now, forgive me), but my take on it is this. The student can't count the time in the sim unless there's an instructor there, and endorses the logbook as such. If it's gone in the students logbook as dual received, then it should be loggable as dual given. That said, I don't log it as dual given, but only because I'm not that concerned with my amount of dual given hrs.

You CAN log it as dual given, I've looked it up before. and no I can't remember where in the FARs it it.

[/ QUOTE ]It was a side thread. Yes, you may log dual given in a sim, but =not= because you are a "required crewmember" in something that doesn't require a crew.

The FAR you are probably referring to is:

"Pilot time" is defined in 61.1(b)(12) as.
==============================
that time in which a person -
(i) Serves as a required pilot flight crewmember;
(ii) Receives training from an authorized instructor in an aircraft, flight simulator, or flight training device; or
(iii) Gives training as an authorized instructor in an aircraft, flight simulator, or flight training device.
==============================

(NO! That doesn't mean flight time!)
