I got my email this weekend and need to place my preferences. I currently live in Iowa, but would like to move to Colorado or Kansas City. Are the Kansas City airports classified as Missouri or Kansas? Also is there a map of where the En Route Facilities are located? Thanks

Can't tell ya on the classifications of the airports, but here's a link to view the ARTCCs. http://microvoltradio.com/ARTCC/ARTCC.htm it'll give you a general idea of their locations. It lists the centers by the closest major city.

Kansas En Route is located in Olathe (nice area) about 25 miles southwest of Kansas City, MO. There is a KC, MO and KC, KS but Kansas City Int'l now called MCI I believe is in Missouri, actually lcoated about 10-15 miles northeast of downtown Kansas City. Thats why it was hard for me to do Kansas I realy want en route center (KS)OR KCI (MO) both about 15 minutes either way for me, but that would take up both states. So I picked Kansas and Florida

Oki... let's see here:

ZKC (Kansas City En Route Center) is in Olathe, Kansas

KMCI (Kansas City International) Terminal/Tower is in Kansas City, MO

KMCI (KCI) TRACON is in Kansas City, MO at the BASE of the KMCI tower

KMKC (Downtown Kansas City) Tower is also in Kansas City, MO

You also have in Kansas:

Wichita & Topeka as major cities, plus TONS of other smaller airports with control towers!

I'm going to put down Kansas & Missouri and put in the comments that I'm asking for Kansas City for my Missouri option (I do NOT want to go to St. Louis!), and that I would prefer Wichita or Kansas City for my Kansas option.

BTW- I live in Olathe at 151st & Blackbob, about 2 miles away from the center, so obviously the center is my #1 choice..... anyone know how likely it'd be for me to get ZKC, and how LONG it'll be? I had an AT-SAT score of 98.2 that I took at the beginning of April, and I've applied for the Feb & May announcements, but neither have any referall lists posted up yet.

I live in Kansas City about 10 miles south of KCI. I applied at ZKC in Olathe last July. I didn't take the test til March. I went to the PEPC in Ft. Worth last week and I am waiting on my final offer. ZKC is the only place I applied for and from what I've heard they need help there just as badly as anywhere else.

It seems like most of you guys are interested in staying local near KS. I received the letter regarding the position at ZKC being open and is willing to go for the PEPC at Chicago, Ill (hopefully soon). I applied through the OTS in 2007 and was giving two choices only, KS and Washington, but would rather stay at east coast or go west coast if given a choice. Just wanna know what other locations you guys have selected or being referred?

I took a tour of ZKC over 3 years ago, looked around & said to myself that THIS is what I want to do with the rest of my life. (or at least the next 25 years) So I listed Kansas as my top choice & chose the enroute only option. I know it reduces my chances of getting picked, but I really don't think I'd be happy at terminal, & from what I hear it's next to impossible to switch from terminal to enroute.

I'm also an OTS from '07 (Aug). My referrals are below.

I have heard that going from terminal to enroute isn't that hard. It is much harder to go from enroute to terminal. Enroute are all busy facilities and it is considered a 'promotion' to work there.

I chose only terminal postions for VA and WV. I don't want to be on a scope my entire shift. I like the ability to work on radar and also be able to see what is going on outside (not to mention from at least 100ft up with a 360 degree view). I guess that is because right now I work on a computer screen all day, but hey I'm glad there are plenty that want a center position.

SQuirell88: I noticed you applied to SC. I wanted to work at CHS, do you have any information on this facility (other than it is an up and down combined)?

I don't have a whole lot of info on Charleston. I actually toured CAE(Columbia) and GSP(Greenville-Spartanburg) recently. From what the people at CAE and GSP told me about CHS is that they do a lot of military traffic with the air station right next to the runway which gives them the lvl 8. They are also a 24hr tower along with CAE, but the rest of SC towers aren't. I don't know anything about their staffing levels. The panel met last week for SC, so I hope to hear something this week. I do know GSP is adequately staffed until next year, (that was my #1 spot I wanted), CHS is my #2, but I don't know about their staffing levels. CAE is pretty well staffed, but they could take on a few more people. So at least that knocks out 2 of the 5 in SC for possible hiring. Sorry I don't know more.

My sister lives down in the CHS area so I go down there quite a bit. What drives you to want to move there?

My mother lives there, and I used to live there a few years ago but I moved back to New York! I kind of miss it now, especially since I have 2 children and the cost of living is decent there as well.....Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it!

Topeka Tower is contracted out. It's not FAA. Wichita is the only terminal position in KS.

If you like KC, you will like Indianapolis. They are the same in many many ways. All center facilities are pretty much the same. I took tours of ZKC and ZID, and it was almost identical. As far as the radar scopes...exactly the same.
