Light GA into KCVG

Hey guys,

I'm a CFI from western Kentucky and my girlfriends mom lives in Rising Sun Indiana which is near absolutely nothing... The closest airport (by far the closest) is KCVG... Since I'm a CFI (which is synonym for "broke") I usually just borrow a friends 172 and pay for the fuel... Anyone here had any experience (good, bad or indifferent?) thunking a light GA aircraft down at CVG? I landed a 172 at MEM once to go get some BBQ, didn't think that was all that bad - controllers were pretty nice folks...

Just thought I'd ask...

CVG is a piece of cake. Been in numerous times under both VFR and IFR at different hours of the day. All the times I've been there have been with students and we just did full-stop-taxi-backs for departure, so I can't personally say anything about the landing fee's but I read somewhere (maybe an airnav.com review?) that it is an $80 landing fee at the FBO...

I'd go, and have to LUK instead. Rising Sun i just noticed is a VFR checkpoint outside of CVG. Looks like I67 is closer though, just to the north.

I was based in CVG and saw plenty of GA aircraft in and out of there during my time. Like mentioned above, it is no big deal, but I do think the landings fees are pretty steep. Also, CVG isn't nearly as busy as it used to be.

Totally doable. I have flown in there multiple times for touch and go's and they are always cool about it. I would file IFR just so it runs more efficiently

It's such a different animal than it was a year ago. I went through there yesterday, and it was almost sad.

You could probably convince the tower to let you do closed traffic, it's so bad.

Can't be any worse than PIT! Of all the once mighty hubs that have fallen, PIT has got to be near the bottom.
