Life w the B-1...

Had no idea Rockwell made the B-1

The B-1 is a freakin cool airplane. The complexity of the swing-wing alone, for an aircraft that size, must be nuts.

Live about 15 miles from Tinker AFB, where they do most of the major maintenance on the B-1... Can hear, and feel, them when they take off.

funny seeing these pics, at my job (UH-60 RESET Mechanic) they just posted a picture of this bird with I assume the pilots standing in front of it gear up.

132 is the only B-1 that has landed gear up. The SOP prior to this incident was to punch out if they had to gear up the airplane. The designing engineers said that it would be "impossible" for the B-1 to do a gear up landing and any attempt to do so would result in a magnificent cartwheeling down the runway. -This coming from the SOF's that are in the tower w us. It was one of the things that made this incident so interesting. One of the many things....

I would highly doubt that it was the pilots of the incident aircraft that were taking pictures. There was some bad blood at DG with a lot of really pissed off pilots after the incident. It was the pilot's 2nd incident. They were off the island in rapid fashion, and back at Dyess. Or another base... Something like that.

Add to that a closed runway for 2 weeks, limiting flying, and requiring flights to land on the taxiway. The investigation is some good reading, with words like disabled aural warning, and circuit breaker manually disabled thrown in.

We gave 3 "CHECK WHEELS DOWN" calls prior to the landing, btw. (We didn't see the landing light, and told them so.) "Verify 3 down and locked?" "AFFIRM, TOWER..." I'll never forget that, or the 100 foot long tongue of fire and sparks coming from both the AB's and the nacelles as they dragged it down the runway in full 'burner. I stood there with my mouth open.

"Ring the crash phone, again, and call the skipper, again. Wheeeeellllll... So much for getting off at 2300." There was a B-52 that landed a few minutes prior with a brake fire, and the CC was already out on the field.

I found the 1st flight photos, also. Try to get those posted this evening.

where can I get the reading file for the investigation?

I saw it while I was still in. I haven't been able to locate it since in its true format. I've yet to see an accident investigation get released in its true format while I was in. There's quotes and summaries available online, but I've never seen it released publicly.

Nor will my Safety Investigation Board report I wrote, ever be released. They don't get released publically. They're privileged documents with privileged information. Accident Investigation Report summaries are releaseable, and available.

That is one graceful bird. One of the few planes I know that looks like it is flying even when it is sitting on the ramp. Really, really beautiful. Like most things of beauty, however, I'm sure she is rather high-maintenance.

Man I miss my days in the AF... There is nothing like taking a broken down jet like this and putting it back into service...
If I could do another 20 years I would do it all over again....

AWESOME post. I had the opportunity to fly troops into DG a little less than a year ago. Pretty neat, I'd love to go again. Wish there was B1 action still.

What was out there when you were there? There was usually a steady turn of B-52's, B-1's, or B-2's. Had it dried up when you were there? Do you fly a rotator (N. American, World, Etc?)
