Life Insurance

This morning a broker informed me that his firm does not offer disability insurance to pilots, and that I should expect a higher premium for life insurance. I figured this would happen. A friend suggested I check out Harvey Watt & Co. for insurance. What do you guys do for life insurance/disability insurance?

I don't carry disability insurance right now. My wife and I are in the process of getting our life insurance underwritten right now. I went through Zander Insurance. They are a relatively large broker out of Tennessee and will shop hundreds of companies. You can get an instant quote and apply for most policies from their website. They mail you the full application and schedule a short medical exam then underwrite the policy. I should know next week what my premium is for sure and will post again. Good luck! There are a ton of brokers out there so shop around!

Find a new broker. Usually life insurance, from what I have found, is cheaper for pilots.

Harvey Watt took care of me. I will say that due to me being an active CFI, they couldn't get me on a level term policy, but said they could switch it later when my work situation changed.

AOPA has a life insurance program, but the customer service I got when trying to get a quote was HORRIBLE.

Don't know where you've been shopping, but I had a hell of a time finding someone who would cover pilots without adding a huge premium for the "extra risk."

Thats what my broker told me. Typically he said, Pilots live longer because of the medical requirement and trying to keep healthy.

It really depends on what kind of flying you do.

Profesional airline or charter pilot is not very risky. But any private flying is a giant red flag.

I had to fill out an addendum about the nature of my flying but look for a different broker immediately.

I had no problem getting life insurance whatsoever.

They told me that as long as it was private flying, I was fine. The CFI or professionally flying pistons was the red flag. Oh well. I have something now, and I'll probably be in something burning Jet-A soon enough. The piston twin might be enough to make things simple again.

Aroo?! Really? New broker man!

Besides, you use a broker to do all the dirty work for ya, rather than the other way around.

As an active CFI the ONLY place that would insure me without an aviation waiver and a very high premium was AOPA. The rate turned out to be cheaper than local agents without the waiver. I think mine is 400k for @$35-40 a month.

Can't speak for life, but I got disability through colonial, they were pretty reasonable, even for billy bob bush pilot.

You're a red neck pilot with floats! Or a hick pilot with a pontoon plane! I found you a new Avatar!
