Can anyone tell what kind of plane that was shot down over libya? Heard it was something the rebels got a hold of that didnt last long...Looks like an F1? Same type that defected to malta before all this?

The one I've seen most often looked an awful lot like a Mig 27 or possibly a Mig 23 (nose looks a little small, I think). I've also heard reports of an SU-24 going down, but I don't think there are any great pictures of that one...there is a grainy video IMS.

Definitely something swing-wing in the short video i saw in passing today. Fitter or Flogger, IMHO.

It was a Mig-23BN from what I understand. That's what it looks like to me as well. Just looked over the book Red Eagles concerning the Mig-23 and it was seemingly a dog, dangerous to fly but could accelerate like a bat out of hell.

Definitely a Mig-23

News was reporting AAA. If you watch the BBC news video, you can hear it very clearly.....maybe some of you more experienced guys can recce what kind of caliber from the noise/firing rate.....my green ears guess something like 37 mm

I've been shot at with plenty of AAA, and could probably identify it by size/color/altitude of airburst, but I've never "heard" it, nor could I even hazard a guess at size based on sound alone.

Fair enough.....I was thinking more along the lines of firing rate of heavy vs light AAA.

Media says ground fire and they say it was a pro-rebel Mig, not a Libyan AF Mig.

Pro-rebel mig? Wasn't aware the rebels had any aircraft... Was it a Libyan AF defector or from another country?

pretty amazing shot of it going down though

Defector probably. Appears the rebels shot it down too. Yup......PID is going to be a problem.

My understanding is that the rebel forces acquired 4 or so Migs and pilots to fly them. Minus this Mig, 3 planes now.

That's no joke, Hacker.
Shoot,... even Rebels have to train a little bit. Plus, those SG's were fearsome in Yugoslavia in '99.
