Air Canada CRJ crashed on landing with an emergency vehicle on the runway. First images don’t look great 🫤

Flight from Montreal landed from at 11:38 EDT (about an hour ago), landed Rwy 04, ADS-B looks like it never exited the runway and stopped at Taxiway D.

Grim thought, but I wonder how they shutdown the engines.

Btw sounds like one controller working both ground and tower. I hope this puts that practice to bed. Problem is our government is inept AF and won’t do anything to fix the staffing issues. Too busy creating fake wars. Sorry not trying to make this political but wtf. Fix the damn system. This just killed a good mood after an awesome night of college basketball. Can’t enjoy the little things anymore.

Fire truck Handline or turret water pressure down the engine intakes to kill them.

The ATC audio is here. Sounds like the controller cleared the fire truck to cross the runway right in front of the landing CRJ. This is tragic, but it could have been a helluva lot worse.

Some immediate questions that come to mind.

Even though the fire trucks were cleared to cross the runway, did the apparatus driver physically look both ways prior to crossing? If so, how did he not see landing lights that would arguably have been on short final? Even if there was some fog reported, the glow of the lights will be there.

The truck acknowledged the crossing clearance, how did he not hear or acknowledge the multiple calls by the controller to stop?

Staffing issues have been a problem for many, many years. Nothing has seemingly been done about it in all this time.

A controller working tower and ground, I wouldn’t put that practice to bed; I would make it only for tower facilities of X rating and below. Same controller working tower/ground at GEU or RYN airports? Works fine. Same controlller working tower/ground at LGA/EWR/DCA, etc? Yeah, not so much there.

Yes, agreed. Should’ve clarified that.

Not sure if this is the same truck requested but a United 737 aborted just before and said they had fumes, wanted fire to meet at the gate. If heading over for that maybe got a bit complacent and trust worthy they were ok to cross. Also contributing factor to play into the controller extra workload on top of added frequencies

@MikeD The CRJ landed at 0338 so there was somewhere between 4 and 7SM visibility. Most likely closer to 4SM, but still plenty of vis to see the landing lights of a CRJ.
