Lens Question

Been a lurker here for a long time and decided to go ahead and jump in. Just purchased a new Nikon D60 and I am looking for a good lens(not too expensive) to shoot medium to long range shots. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The Nikor 55-200 VR lens is pretty good and fairly inexpensive.

Seconded. That's the best cheap lens with some length which you can buy today. Have a look over at nikoncafe to get some other opinions as well.

One cool thing that you probably learned from your research is that Nikon's F mount has not changed appreciably since its inception. With all pro models and some consumer models, you can mount up a 50 year old lens and it will work (sans autofocus in all cases, and sans metering in some cases, too). Go over to the Cafe (Lens Lust subforum) and see if the D60 can accept AI or AI-S lenses. I don't think it can, but there are a couple guys who modify the old lenses for use on newer bodies. It's usually around $30 a lens if I recall.

The nicest lens in my bag is a 1970s vintage 180mm 2.8 AI-S lens I picked up on ebay for $100. It's a little more work than autofocus lenses, but it's the sharpest and fastest lens I have.
