Legal to Land on Taxiway?

A local airport here has their one runway closed for resurfacing but the airport manager has given permission to land on the taxiway. Is it legal if the airport manager says so or does the FAA need to grant some sort of waiver for this?

I'm not aware of any Federal restrictions about what you can land on and what you can't. In other words, the FAA doesn't care, as long as it doesn't violate 91.13. However, I do understand there may be local ordinances that affect non-airport landings.

Landing on the taxiways is very, very common when the runway is being maintained and some airports will actually paint runway markings on the taxi, as well as move lighting systems.

I soloed on a taxiway due to runway construction.

The FAA has no regulation whatsoever saying what you can land on or what you can't. You can land on a 2 lane country road if you wish.

you can pretty much land wherever you want as long as you don't bust 91.13. Including roads, gravel bars, roof tops, just make sure you are safe about it and have a reason for it.

Fly into Sun n Fun and that's where you'll be landing.

It seems like the kind of thing that won't cause any issues unless metal gets bent, then the FAA will throw good old 91.13 at you.

They actually gave us the option to do that at our FBO here when they were doing MX on the runway. My CFI didn't wanna let his student solo on the taxiway though so he didn't fly.

I have had to do it once because there were 14 gliders backed up ON a 3200 x 50 runway, and I was a little low on room.

Landed on the taxiway and rolled it to the end, to have 3 more gliders come in behind me.

All thanks to a wonderful storm that formed right over the home airport as everyone was just getting back. That was a very interesting landout... lol

Another example -

Mayor Daley forced people to takeoff from the taxiway at Meigs after he "closed" it.

I used to go into an airport that was 32 x 2000 feet wide. Fun, especially with student pilots working on their short field. A student at my old flight school decided that the parallel taxiways was the runway and proceeded to land on it during his solos. We only found out after he passed his check ride.

The company I fly for lands on the road at Shirleyville (nikolai creek for all you flatlanders if ya look it up)

We have a Notice to airmen on our ATIS most of the time saying not to confuse parallel taxiway echo with runway 17/35 because a few GA people unfamiliar with the airport made a landing on it.

We were having to do it for a while South Lake Tahoe did work to their runway. Their was a notam out for it letting you know if you wanted to get in there, that was your only choice

My airport (RYY) is currently using one of the taxiways as a temporary runway while the runway is being resurfaced. Of course it is VFR only, no touch and goes, no pattern work, no student solo flight, no jets, etc., while it is in use.

I have gone duck hunting using a C172 in south louisiana. We took off out of BTR and landed on a tow lane highway and pulled off the road. We went hunting then took back off to head home. Its the best way to go hunting, not much travel time to the blinds and home!:)
