Leave a Message or keep calling?

If you're calling a prospective employer for the first time (to introduce yourself and express interest, etc, etc.) and you're redirected to a voicemail, would you leave a message to introduce yourself or would you keep trying until you get a hold of someone?

I'm trying to get a hold of the pilot recruiter at Colgan, but my past experiences with leaving messages with HR departments seems to be a worthless effort. Your thoughts?

If you actually know the person (as in having actually met them in person, and they would recognize your name) then leave a message, if you don't know them then I wouldn't bother with a message.

IF the HR person has caller I.D. then he/she will know that you called and didn't leave a message. If I were the hiring person, this would look unprofessional.

People in real business have answering services for a reason - that's so they can conduct business when they're away from the phone conducting business (if that makes sense).

They probably have 50 people a day just hang up....you want them to remember you. Leave a message, tell them your interest, be polite, leave a number and a good time for them to call you back, and tell them when you will try again.

Good luck.......Godspeed!
