Learning the KLN 94 vs. KLN 89B

I'm needing to learn the KLN 94 but I've heard there is no simulator available. Is this true?

Secondly, there is a simulator available for the 89B and I've heard that the 89B is close enough to the 94 that if I learn the 89B that it will be no problem with the 94. What do you think?
 
It's true there's no simulator available (smart move King!) for the 94. The 89B is really quite a bit different, I don't know how much you'd gain from playing with that simulator. Best bet, is find a -94 in an airplane somewhere, and see if you can plug in ground power and play with it. It's not very user-friendly IMO, so have the manual handy.

I believe I have a user manual I could let go for cheap?
 
King GPSs are so not user friendly ...Garmin GNS430/530 FTW! If you can operate a 430, you can operate a 530 no problem.

In the 89B, there's no "proc" button to load the approach, you have to load them from the flight plan page. Once loaded, the operation is similar.

The 94 also has a vectors to final mode, which the 89B doesn't not have.

If I were you, I'd play with the 89B, learn to

1) load the approach
2) go direct to the IAF
3) recognize turn anticipation
4) recognize going active.
5) use OBS mode
6) Hold at a fix
7) Go missed
8) Reinitiate the approach
9) Change the scaling
 
Also, using the KLN89 for GPS approaches is a bitch. By getting it to work properly you have to trick it by performing voodoo and answering challenging mathematical questions about astrophysics.

Yea, I've been using the Garmin 430 simulator as well as going through the manual and so far it seems pretty user friendly. I like it. The king manual, however, is already proving to be a bit more difficult.

Yeah, plus if anyone is an Industrial Design fanatic like I am, you will throw up when you see the exterior design of the KLN89 unit. Fake chrome border and an overall design from the early 1980's - looks like they hired the guy who designed the RCA TV's with the fake wood grain paneling back in 1983.

Garmin buttons are so much more fun to push... nice and clean.
 
I hate the 98B. Somewhere along the development process, they forgot the ppl using it, won't be the ppl building it.
 
I learned on a 89B. Didn't have any problem going to the 94 and Garmins after that. Play around with the 89B sim, it will help.
 
Not a huge fan of the 89B, but I do like the KLN 94. Once you learn the language, it'll do everything the G430 will. The Garmin is a bit more intuitive, but the KLN is just as good as far as functionality.
 
Hey-
A Honeywell rep is coming to our school and giving a seminar on the 94B. It is free and he is bringing several 94B stand-alone simulator boxes to play with.

I can give you his info and if you can round up a few people he might be able to help you.
