Learning Jeppesen Charts

Hey guys,

Like a lot of of people I learned using the FAA's NACO charts. As I'm begining to get into business aviation, I'd like to make sure that I can read Jeppesen charts just as well. What's the best way to do this? I have some hand-me-down Jepp charts from an airline captain, and I seem to undertand most things. However, I don't have a legend or anything. Is there some sort of guide or publication out there that outlines the Jepp charts? I see there is software that does this, but it's $60!

Thanks,
-Brett

See if you can get a hold of a Legend. I think if you go on the Jepp web site there is a PDF about learning Jepps as well (Jepp Charts Handbook). Also, I think there is a DVD but its pretty expensive.

Get yourself an old set of Jepps . . . or a new one. Perhaps go to the Jepp website and order one of the trip Kits (one-time purchase for a specific region with no subscription).

The entire legend with come with it. It will teach you everything you need to know about Jepp charts.

Then, to ensure that you understand them, sit down with the Jepp chart for an airport in one hand, and the NACO chart in the other. Compare every detail until it makes sense to you. Do that for airport diagrams, SIDS, STARS, DPs, Approach Plates, etc.

You'll be good to go!

As cheezy as they are, the 2 King videos are pretty good. (especially when watched @ 1.5 times speed on my Mac) They will also come on handy as a review right before a regional interview. I've probably watched them 12 times over the last couple of years.

Ebay maybe??? The VHS's should be dirt cheap on Ebay. (BTW - VHS is the big black rectangle - not an iPod video, VHS has no screen - that goes in the other side of the DVD player you buy @ Costco. Your grandparents probably have one or there's one in the garage holding up the corner of a workbench.:sarcasm:)

I can send you my old legend when I get the new publish, which is like in a month or so

I switch back and forth between Jepps and NACO without any trouble. It all depends on who I'm flying with that day and what they like to bring with them. I generally just print out the NACO charts for where we're going but sometimes, they throw me for a loop and say, fly this approach and they'll throw a Jepp at me.

It's not too difficult. The information may be presented slightly differently, but it's all there for you.

I agree. Its no secret that the Kings be a little dry, but their Jepp review DVD was actually not all that bad. Plus I think the entire course is like 3 hours long. Used it a bunch when I was interviewing. Very handy.
