LAX airspace - VFR transition routes

For those familiar with this area, how is So Cal approach with granting class B clearance when requesting one of the transition routes? Specifically, transitioning on the shoreline route? I'd like to save the time using these routes instead of the VFR flyway routes that circumvent the Bravo.
Thanks!

I have a number of friends who own aircraft at SMO, VNY, and LGB.

Flown with a number of them through the shortline route, and it was never a problem. Then again, this was about 3 to 4 years ago.

Review the VFR Terminal Area Chart. There are several options. You can still get the shoreline route but ATC generally wants you at 5500 or greater.

I generally use the 'Los Angeles Special Flight Rules Area' that goes over the top of LAX. You still get the view of the Ocean and a really cool view LAX when you are directly overhead.

I hate to admit it but I've been too much of a wuss to try any of those routes. Is it really that difficult or am I just building it up to be in my head?

In your head...definitely try the VFR corridor that goes directly over top of LAX...just listen to the right freq., correct squawk and it's a piece of cake!

Then...complete the day by heading out to Catalina!!!!

Definitely in your head. If you are still uncomfortable, I am always interested in flying so I would be willing to go with you. I fly out of SNA.

I've flown the mini route over LAX with a friend before. It wasn't too bad at all. Although I was reading about the SFR area over LAX, and I was kinda confused as to how that was different (other than altitude) than something like the mini route. Why don't you have to talk to ATC on that one?

I instruct at LGB and send my students through the bravo all the time. I like the special flight rules area best, you dont even need a clearance.

Hey whats going on guys!:hiya:
I fly out of CRQ so if anyone wants to go cruise the shore lines of beautiful southern cal just let me know. I'm always looking to go flying and build up some hours. Let me know or send me a message.

I recommend the "mini-route"... 2500 over LAX and you have protection from the controllers at LAX. Contact SMO or HHR over the correct point, they will give you a squawk and a freq. change... LAX will clear you into the B... then enjoy the view of the big-ones 2500ft. above.

I fly out of VNY but maybe we can work something out sometime.

Would the call go something like "SM tower, Cherokee blah blah blah, over Sepulveda Pass, req. Mini Route transition". Also I usually call clearance deliver for traffic advisories before I taxi. Could I request any of those routes from them?

Well, physically, that's true. But the real difference is being under positive ATC control, or not.

The LAX special flight rules area was created to reduce workload on everyone. ATC doesn't have to monitor you, and you don't need a clearance. All you have to have is the VFR Terminal area chart with you in order to do it.

All the other VFR transition routes through LAX Class B will need a class B clearance, and contact with ATC. These transition routes should always be available because they are designed to keep you out of all the LAX traffic. Just call up ATC and tell them where you are and which route you want to take through the class B....It won't be a big deal.

I personally liked the special flight rules area because it's less complicated and you still get the view....
