Law Enforcement Pilots

Flying will depend on the department your with, meaning there is a requirement in patrol before transferring out. Then the gigs outside of patrol, flying being one of them can be hard to get. My department put flying on the side with the budget problems in 09, and only now are we seeing the bird again, although it is very little.

How is flying for customs?
The one guy that I talked to that did it hated it. He said one day he's flying the citation, the next the UAV, and the next he's getting out of a helicopter patrolling on the ground.

Perhaps this is a dumb question, but I'd rather ask it than not.

Why is street experience as a LEO a requirement in most departments?

Anyone know about the FBI aviation unit?

Going to be a lot more difficult with even more competition from military members and former LEOs, and much stiffer requirements. As far as I know, (someone correct me if I am wrong) FBI pilots are not hired off the street, they must serve as Special Agents for several years before they can apply for a flying position. You also have to consider the time involved in such a career and how often you would be gone from your family.

Most agencies unless they contract a civi helicopter are going to require their pilots to work patrol and move their way up into the aviation unit. In California almost every agency including DOJ, CHP, LASO, LAPD require you to be a peace officer so you will attend an POST academy like every other peace officer. Now with that said pay for being a police officer is pretty good. Like someone else posted if you don't like helping people and taking crap (i.e., daily abuse) you will not enjoy pushing a black and white.

In California, CHP might be the quickest to an aviation unit as they have a large one. They fly both fixed wing and helicopters.

I believe he is now IrishSheepdg and was FlyChicaca. I dont see him post much on here anymore. I know hes been busy.

I just posted two above you! Also it was FlyChicaga... not FlyChipoopie. :) I don't go on message boards much at all anymore with my schedule and the kiddo. Just too little time. I can only read so much about who is getting what RJs. I am trying to read more of the GA posts and stuff about Warbirds or Military jets since those were my passions in aviation before I got sucked into the airline game.

To show how out of touch I am, I had no idea (still not entirely sure) what Envoy is/was, until I pulled over an Envoy gate agent who tried using his ORD ID to talk out of a couple tickets.

Haha. I never would have thought to use my SIDA or airline badge to get me out of a ticket. That's a good one. "Who cares if I was doing 25 over sir? I'm a good citizen! See, I've had a background check!"

Also, @IrishSheepdog I tried PMing you. But that function is blocked.

LE Aviation is a support unit to the main police function: Patrol. Patrol officers are the backbone of LE, and all the tools we have are used to support that basic role. K9, SWAT, Crime Scene, etc., are all used to improve the ability for the first guys on-scene to do their job effectively. So it's important to have a good knowledge of the patrol function before taking a job to support it.

Hahahahahahaha, seriously?! That's pathetic. I wouldn't even try to use my company ID to try to get out of a ticket, and my agency and the IMPD are sister agencies under the city's DPS! I'd just shut up and take the ticket :)

I plan to use it if I ever get pulled over by our airport police :)

I recommend no badge, name dropping. But if you can put in context when your stopped, the officer might just let you out of it. I have giving a DL pilot a break when I noticed his "ticket" in his wallet. We spoke about that, then he mentioned he is also a pilot in the Air Force, and for sure he was not getting any citation.
