latest FedEx hiring rumor

Damn 113 B-727's sounds like a lot of the new hires might be sitting "sideways" for a long while.

How bout getting some B-757/767's in that Fed-Ex fleet.

Ya know. I hear a lot of complaining from people who don't know sqat about being an airline pilot make bad comments about "sitting sideways". Not sure where that comes from. (not picking on you mr max, but I've seen about ten posts along these lines over the last month or two and I chose this moment to say something about it)

I sat sideways for four years and it was a good experience. It's easy money, for one thing. You are busy when on the ground. In the air...you make sure no lights come on and make sure the pilots don't screw up, that's about it.

It's a great opportunity to sit back and see how Capts and F/O's work together. A chance to see and compare how different guys do things and store stuff away in your head for future reference. There will be fewer and fewer chances for guys to sit sideways as time goes on. I think that's a shame cause I got a lot out of it.

I second DE's observations on the value of sitting sideways.

In any event, I don't think most folks sit sideways more than a year or so, especially at the current expansion rate.

As to 757s, company is looking at them, but problem is that they don't carry that much more than a 727-200 and you need "heavy" ATC spacing with them, which is not good on the launch and recovery.

The 767 has no value for our fleet, A300 fits that and works better with the container size.

I rode 'side saddle' for a year and I absolutely loved it!

I flew with a lot of interesting crews, got a chance to 'eavesdrop' on conversations to learn the norms and got a deeper understanding of jet aircraft systems beyond "Well, XYZ on the EICAS...turn to page 12 section C for the abnormal."

Besides, being a copilot is nothing more than being a flight engineer with landing priviledges.

The greatest thing is that we can keep those birds flying during the day, too w/ the USPS contract!

Seagull, what is your job and location - pm me if you don't want to mention it here --

I have no issue sitting sideways. Porbably not a relaity in my future unles I fly freight. So I hope that I didn't imply that with my post. Prior to the 757 the 727 was my fave aircraft.
Please corect me if I'm wrong though but FE's don't record flighttime do they or if they do it is cut in half vs. what the pilots get right?
Someone was teling me that the other day didn't believe him so thought I'd throw it out on here.

FE's time is not "pilot" time, whether you want to count it towards total or not is up to you, but doesn't go in any other columns, like PIC or SIC.

The way the industry is going, freight is about the only decent flying that's going to be left!
