Laser idiot caught

Had a recent rash of laser incidents hitting our planes throughout our area recently(I had two separate incidents within 5 mins 20 miles apart last week). One particular area has had multiple over the last month and last night they got an AirTran B717, we had a police helicopter on frequency a few miles away. The helicopter volunteered to go check it out and working with the ground units they busted the guy/gal(don't know which) after they tagged the helo. I am getting sick of that BS so I hope they throw the book at them.

No details beyond that or any links but I thought you all would appreciate knowing that someone got caught.

Bravo to the police guys putting themselves at risk to catch them.

I don't think these idiots realize it is akin to attempted murder of countless people doing this.

That's good they got caught. I've been lasered twice now. Once in general aviation and once in the airlines. I've reported both times and ATC took it very seriously.

I've been hit with a laser, over Fargo, last year. I reported it to Tower, but they just told me that I was cleared to land....

I almost want to carry a laser with me so if this ever happens I can orbit the numbnut's house and shine one right back... Then have the cops come and arrest their ass.

Arrest them? Hell, if you are going to "light'm up", have the Police hellicopter fire a laser guided rocket at them! A couple of those incidents and I'll be it would stop pretty quick.

Glad people like this got caught. I got hit by a laser in Puerto Rico about a year and a half ago. Reported it to the tower and was given the number to San Juan CERAP. They took a full report on it and even launched a couple Policia helos. Never heard if the person got caught, but they were very serious about it.:bandit:

I also think it's funny that everyone gets busted by lighting up the police helicopter. Good idea.

Not that you do too much night flying but you fly over the area it happened on every return leg.

I'll keep an eye out then. The only night flying I do this time of year though is the last flight out of BWI on sunday and monday evenings.

Good Ol' BWI. Love that airport. :bandit:

I like it. Doesn't run ridiculous ground delay programs whenever there's a raindrop. When I used to fly in and out of BOS they'd go into a 2 hour delay whenever the weather would be less than 2000' ceilings.

Glad they have been caught. I heard of one one incindent at ORD with a Delta DC-9 recently. I hope this stops it completely and they stop anyone else who tries to do this.

Glad they got caught, I've never been hit with one but once departing ADS tower informed me that the plane ahead of me had reported being hit.

If it's on Dateline the public would make an outcry and Congress will make a $100Billion laser bill.

I have heard about lasers and pilots before, but what exactly happens?

Are they shooting just a small laser pointer into the cockpit during approach/takeoff or is it a much larger unit that is even more serious?

Sorry for such a noob question, but I have never heard of any specifics before.

I'm also curious.

These aren't the little ol' lasers you play with your cat. These things are the green ones that have quite a bit of punch when it hits the cockpit. If you are looking right at them it can cause temporary blindness.
