Laptop Funeral...

Ramper left my crewbag out in the rain thinking I was leaving but just went on a break and my laptop got soaked. I've been advised to go to the Chief Pilot and see if I can get a reimbursement. I think its a long shot but I'll try on Monday. Anyway, anybody got any good cheap laptop recommendations? Mainly for use on overnights.

:p

I sometimes find good deals in a local laptop factory surplus/refurbisher. I'm would bet there're such places in Atlanta.

That Sucks!

I bought a Sony Vaio from Best Buy about a month ago for a little over $600. I'm sure it's not a super computer, but it does the little things that I need it to do.

My laptop died at age 2.5 a few months ago. I do not miss going through security with that thing and I have no plans to go back to taking one on trips.

I am considering an iTouch though for the casual checking of e-mail. We'll see.

Get a laptop case with a nametag on it and keep it in the cockpit with you. Nametag so if you leave it by accident another FO can put it in your mailbox or put a note on the board in the baddabing lounge. Never leave that kind of stuff in the cargo hold.

My laptop always goes in the cockpit or cabin with me...

What was so bad about taking it through airport security?

I bring mine through three times a week and it only adds about ten seconds per screening.

Word up, yo.

My laptop is with me when I'm in the cockpit and when I'm on break too.

Never ever.... EVER EVER EVER trust a ramper with anything important that you couldn't handle not making the destination. Nothing wrong with rampers, but if it's important to you, keep it with you.

I have a 5-6 year old Dell laptop. It looks like a brick compare to today's laptops. It survived a tour in Iraq, was lugged around for 100s of hours in a helicopter, and still has sand in the keyboard. It is going strong to this day.

Are you sure it's dead? Just because it was soaked doesn't mean it's ruined as long as it was turned off. If you allow it to dry COMPLETELY and then turn it on chances are it will be fine. I split soup all over my current laptop, a Toshiba I got on ebay. I allowed it to dry overnight and it worked fine in the morning.

Yup, just partially dead though. It turns on but doesn't recognize the hard drive, so im thinking the HD got fried.

Tigerdirect.com

You can get parts for your laptop (any components that are fried) or even get a good deal on a new one.

My recommendation is use a hairdryer on it. Take the bottom cover off if you can and expose the motherboard to help it dry. After the hair dryer and that, if it still doesn't work in a few days you may be SOL.

Perhaps the connection for the HD is shorting out. If you haven't already drop that sucker outa there and see if you can clear it of any moisture.

Circuitcity.com has good deals on laptops sometimes. Especially on the acer's. I would look some of those up, can get an awesome laptop for 600$ or less. I bought an acer 2 years ago, and it runs everyday almost all day, and no problems.
