Lancair IV Crashes Into Car on Interstate 15 in San Diego

Looks like a Cessna/columbia 400. Roughly same speeds as a Cirrus on landing but no 'chute. Interesting to see how the cabin stayed intact. A standard cessna/piper product would have crumbled like a beer can and probably took out the plane occupants as well. That car took a big hit. Crazy odds.
 
A freak accident, and not to be an ass, but...Is it really worth pulling over to the shoulder to sync your bluetooth? The thought of being on the side of the road unless absolutely necessary always makes me cringe just because of the risk of a driver not paying attention/getting "target fixation" and slamming into your car. There's enough dashcam videos of it happening.

Isn't that the truth! Was at A's fish grotto with the wife 20 minutes before it happened. I've always said that San diego is usually a quiet town but when stuff happens, we do it up right. i.e. stolen Army tank :)
 
I think pulling over to fiddle with Bluetooth is so much safer.
Plus most newer vehicles won't pair unless the tranny is in park.

I can't believe it's even a debate in this day and age, much less among pilots. Of course it's friggin safer to not dick around with your electronics while you're navigating a multiple-thousand-pound vehicle at 70+ mph mere feet away from other idiots doing the same thing. I swear everyday driver behavior is glaring evidence that technology has far outstripped any kind of evolutionary self-preservation instinct we had left.
 
I'd agree with the pulling over to sync your phone except he had multiple passengers. Surely one of them could pair your phone for you without having to pull over.

I should have been more clear, I wasn't advocating doing it while driving. But pull into a gas station, rest area, anything. The only reason I would want to be on the shoulder is if I absolutely can't move my car. Even then being IN or close to the car would make me extremely uneasy. Half the time people can't be arsed to move over for an emergency vehicle with its lights on, I'm not going to trust most moron drivers to be able to not ram into a small, maybe not readily visible small car.

Agreed. If one can avoid the emergency lane for anything but absolutely necessity, what with cars whizzing past you mere feet from you in the right lane, then that's safest.

Can't tell you how many people I see pulled over into the emergency lane at night, not even pulled as far right as they can be, and attempting to change a flat tire on the left (traffic) side of the vehicle, with their backs to traffic and their bodies nearly on the edge of the right lane. Sometimes without emergency flashers on. Man......just waiting to be squashed like a bug.

Oh for sure. On the freeway in San Diego (shoot, anywhere in Southern California) either find a gas station just wait your phone conversation about the latest disruptive tech until you're somewhere you don't need Bluetooth to do it.
