LaMia Flight 2933 — This is getting REALLY bizarre

This is starting to sound like a soap opera!

Imagine if the person at the FSS or all the internet filing companies were held liable for "accepting" or "approving" an erroneous flight plan that resulted in a death.

Goddamnit. Am I reading this correctly that the person was actually a dispatcher and not an ATC? Considering we don't approve or deny flight plans and don't see anything about the amount of fuel y'all are carrying. First we were the guys with the wands and now dispatchers. Awesome.

The Controller is being blamed a lot for not "giving vectors". Oh, and half the people don't have a clue what Vectors mean. Dumb and panicky people. She's probably fleeing for her life. What I DO know is the airline CEO was detained in Bolivia.

This person was a dispatcher in Bolivia. The Columbian ATC is still there.

Oh wait wait, another dumb press statement. The DISPATCHER fled. Yes, that I buy. Unfortunately, even here in Mexico if you submit a flight plan with a route that's not what they're used to, the FSS personnel won't accept your flight plan. They somehow got to believe they habe some authority.

Thank God for electronic filing I have no need what-so-ever to talk to these folks again.

The takeaway from this story is that journalists don't have the most basic knowledge of what "air traffic control" means.

Well, that and this chick is about to be sacrificed to the powers that be.

To be fair, at least in this country back when FSS was still federal, Flight Service Specialists were classified as air traffic controllers and fell under the ATC early retirement.

My bad. I was under the impression that she was in their equivalent of FSS, and that she had accepted the flight plan.

Dispatchers are just as sick of being called ATC.

Dispatch internationally is not the same thing as it is in the US and I am not sure the Capt in this case actually had to listen to the safety concerns of this person.

Agreed, and it sucks!

Also, I'm sorry I only quoted part of your posts, now that I think of it I should have just bolder those parts in the initial posts. I didn't mean to make it look like I was trying to change the message ( put words in your mouthes)

The DGAC gave me hell down there every once in a while. You had to walk back and forward between different agents getting this stamped and this signed. Heaven forbid you wanted to change your routing, destination, or departure time. That could take hours.

The more backwards the country, the worse the bureaucracy. At least that's the conclusion I came to after flying in the Caribbean and Central America.

Yuup, at first I ended up saying "whatever route and altitude you like". Enroute I'd ask for what I wanted. Them came electronic flight plans (though you need a DGAC license to acceaa the portal), and problem solved. Haha even Clearance delivery tells me "no the route you want for this flight you must fike it like bla bla bla". Sure, whatever. Do your job

I'm pretty sure she was NOT an airline employee/dispatcher. She works for the Government Aviation Authority and is "supposed" to review, approve/accept, and submit your flight plans. AFTER the pilot's submission, she (they) are to review each block and then sign a copy and return it to the pilot.

It's THIS step that has her in hot water; their claim is that she discussed the fuel issue with the CA (4+22 ETE AND 4+22 Endurance), but then accepted the flight plan anyway. NOT good for her
