Lack of RPM

The aero club I used to fly in in Okinawa had a several 172s. I would also make those RPM checks on the takeoff roll. I usually saw about 2300-2400 RPM. This was on 172Hs, a 172P, and a 172RG.

Good on you for making the call to not go with something that didn't look right to you though!

Thats the good thing about P.I.C. , If you are not comfortable with how a airplane is running/flying, you do whats necessary to ensure safety.

Good job with the abort takeoff, you were using good judgement.

Did you try to lean it out to max RPM? Sometimes you can get an extra 100 rpm static by leaning the mixture.

:yeahthat:

I had one flight where I was going to abort because I couldn't get enough RPM.

Then the guy who was flying with me said, you know, you might get a lot more RPM if you do this and reached over and leaned the engine.

I said, but we're not over 3000 feet. Field elevation is only 500 feet, why do I need to lean?

And he said, well, when it's 95 degrees out, and you've got high humidity, what does that do?

Oh, yeah. Density altitude!

If you really want to lean to max rpm, do it on a full throttle run up. Either in position on the runway or at the runup area. If you do it at the runup area, just make sure to point your back end in a direction that is suitable.

I wouldn't do it while rolling as you don't need the distraction.
