LA mid-air, American Flyers

What airport are you referring to? It sounds like the midair occurred over Calabasas and Westlake Village, between VNY and CMA.

Santa Monica. Even thought that's not where they crashed, one of the articles says that both planes were based out of there. I can see the irrational thought process being that since both crashed planes were out of KSMO, then KSMO should be shut down right away for safety reasons. The people looking to shut down KSMO will take whatever they can and twist it to have people favor their side.

Yikes. You're totally right. :(

And they have been trying to shut it down for years. There was a lead study that the EPA did there that the city was trying to use to shut the airport down, until AOPA(I think) showed that the study reflected down town had higher ambient lead levels than the damn airport.

Yep, that was quite recently too and it was AOPA who went to great lengths to bring the correct info to the city planners or whoever is in charge. I've read that the people who are against the airport want to close it down and develop the property.

That is for airport tenants too. Clearly this airports days are numbered.

Hopefully not. Last time they did something similar the feds stepped in and said "do you really want to loose all of your federal funding for city projects?!?"

Well, the city already does not care about the lost revenue the airport its self brings in, so I would be surprised if they cared about the loss of federal funding.

I figured the irrational thinking would set in and this would be a hard thing for the airport to shrug off. Ridiculous.

I thought they would have to pay for past airport improvements paid for by the FAA, as well. Not sure about the Meigs situation with respect to that.

Another blow for Santa Monica. Landing fees are more than doubling and will be charged to all aircraft, including flight schools that are currently exempt.
Santa Monica Airport Fees to Soar

The new revenue is aimed to help reduce the airport's reliance on city funding.
The Santa Monica City Council approved an increase in landing fees at the Santa Monica Airport Tuesday.
The fees will more than double from $2.07 to $5.48 per 1,000 pounds of aircraft by Aug. 1.
As part of the proposal, all aircraft based at the airport, including those owned by local flight schools, will be charged the fees. They are currently exempt...
