KTVC Losing IAP Due To Furloughs

The car rental gal at Traverse City told me this a few days ago and I didn't believe it. Apparently a recert of the ILS won't happen due to the "shutdown" and at least some of the carriers won't be able to shoot approaches. If true, then this won't be the only airport affected. What's going on?

Uh, what's going on?

I don't know if you've noticed, but the House of Representatives has gone off the deep end, and shut down the Federal government.

We're lucky we still have ATC - I'm honestly surprised they've stayed open this long in the absence of continued funding.

I hate to burst all your bubbles.... but back in 2006 before there was a crappy economy and government shut down the FFA had a grand plan for the ATC system. Instead of AF doing periodic maintenance on the ATC equipment (radar radios ils vor etc) that they would just let them fail and than send AF out to fix it. Well it went over like a lead TURD, one day at KORD one of the ILSs went down during bad WX causing a one Rwy operation most of the day and due to the wind we couldnt go to a diffrent config. can you say goat intercourse......it didnt last very long but it happened!!!!

And its gonna have to happen again for changes to be made, unfortunately...

I knew I was getting out of touch with the ins and outs of the industry but now I know I should be asking the rent car girls more than just directions to the hotel and Fridays.

Queeno has always used that contempt acronym for his former organization. They've earned it in a number of ways

Ahh, ok! I'm from the Fresno area so I see FFA and think about the... well, FFA. :)

We had them notam a bunch of approaches up here NA at night because they didn't have current enough survey data.
I think the rumor was at least 18 months to get new data. I think there was some concern that people would run out of soda or something this winter, and I assume congressmen were called and such because once it started getting dark again, suddenly they were no longer NA at night.

That really did get me thinking though. What does it matter if its day or night while I'm IMC? I can't see the rocks either way.

Good thing the federal government has the authority to order us to work (in a no-pay status) while sending the vast majority of our support network home on furlough.

So yeah, when stuff is busted, it's going to be *crickets* *crickets* right now...

I'm not in favor of it. At all.

I'm rather surprised you guys aren't working precisely to rule.

I sent an email to IACRA support this morning and got a phone call back within 10 minutes. Glad to see the important people are still working...

I'm from the middle of Kansas... somewhere in the corn fields if I recall correctly... FFA makes me think of baling hay, running a combine, and feeding 600 head of cattle every morning. Needless to say I don't like thinking of the FFA.

Dont forget, sexy blue corduroy jackets.

There was an FFA convention in - no kidding - Modesto, CA the last time I overnighted there.

An FFA convention, and also a homeschooler convention. It was basically the most awkward thing ever.

Yea, it's been interesting going into TVC these last couple of weeks, especially when the weather goes to crap. You would think my company would give us GPS equipped airplanes considering how often we fly into there, but nope... that would be too nice of gesture for them.

Speaking of broken approaches. I fly out of KSZT sometimes and a couple weeks ago an Aerostar landed long and plowed through the localizer antenna. I figured they'd just close that approach and leave it GPS only, but they are actually putting in a new localizer. I was surprised to hear that.

"A pilot accused of flying drunk crashed his airplane Monday at the Sandpoint Airport, destroying its navigation equipment."
