Korean Air A380 arrival at ATL

Wait until airplanes start getting delays for a SINGLE FREAKIN AIRPLANE! Something like 10 plus miles in trail on final (the same as 3 to 4 "normal" airplanes) and just as many delays on departure...

It never gets old watching the Lufthansa A380 taxi out at the start of my shift. The second I hear "San Francisco Ground, Lufthansa 455 Super spot 10 vif (ATIS)", you can almost hear everyone else on frequency collectively go "Damn it". They have to get, uh, creative sometimes getting that thing out to 28R with the grid locked 2-taxiway system here. Often times they send it on a wayward course and just tell it to follow an Airport ops truck around the entire airport. Other times, they have to hold other wide bodies half way across the airport just anticipating its push back as they can't pass eachother on the taxiways into/out of the international terminal because the damn thing is so huge. A controller once said it best when I heard him say "United 123, HOLD, that big ugly thing just landed and I have to drag it across the airport somehow".

The takeoff is pretty cool though, especially from the vantage point i have at the ramp tower. It just lumbers off the runway and barely climbs. Once in a blue moon, it'll do the Shoreline departure and a steep right turn just after rotation. Now that's fun to watch. Was also a nice ride when I flew on it, Lufthansa's A380 coach product was better than United's 777 buisness product(admitedly I got to last 777 in the fleet with old biz class seats) on the way to FRA.

Wait until I have to follow it in the Saab. 10 miles... nah, we'll just hold somewhere until the dust settles :D

It is a damn ugly airplane, but rather impressive.

I finally got to ride on one from HKG-BKK. Unfortunately we had a bit of a fun evening the night before, so I spent most of the flight trying to sleep. You'd think that would be easy in Thai's first class, but that airplane is so damn quiet you could hear absolutely everything going on throughout the plane. Even with ear plugs.

I remember how exciting it was when the A380 first came to SFO, it was still just touring and not in service at that point I think. Even recently with Lufthansa flying them here almost year round, and Qantas and Emirates already having had A380s visit, when Singapore flew their first one in, huge crowds still gathered on the ramp. Gotta admit, its pretty cool to be right next to one on the ground.

Yep. One time I was waiting for an Air France A380 to take off with @JordanD at the employee lot at the end of 28R here in SFO. A United 747 took off before it and set off over a dozen car alarms. The A380 set off 2. Wow.
Reading QF32 almost makes me a believer. (Good yarn, by the way.)

Just rode one yesterday from CDG to LAX. Soooo quiet. I had a window seat on the bottom floor that looked straight into the wing that slopes up. Basically making it impossible to see anything outside. Kinda bummed I couldn't see much, still amazed how quiet it was.

Saw Lufthansa's yesterday at 16:50 taking off from IAH and coming over Beltway 8, at what seemed 20 ft off the ground. Made a low, wide right turn to get pointed to the north, but the thing I noticed, they don't seem to climb very fast! Watched it for a good 3-4 mins before it disappeared behind a building!
That was my 380 cherry being popped! 1st time to ever see that beast, LIVE!

Had one of these beasts pass over my head several months ago on the way into the SFO rental return. Saw it on the T/O roll and slowed down on the freeway to try and time it right. It DOES climb slow, and holy poop on a stick, is that thing huge. I could get over how big it was as it passed over our car. Not a real pretty thing, but impressive nonetheless.

I was pushing off of F1 to go to BZE when this thing was landing. I noticed people lined up along the roadway with cameras and put 2 and 2 together.. "oh yeah, the first 380 is coming in this morning!"

Sure enough, the smurf manatee came sniffing down final for 27L right in front of us as the push was in progress. There was a huge crowd waiting at the gate it parked at on the odd E gates. They had a follow me car escort it in... the FO spoke very good english for a change.
