Kingair Emergency (vid)

It's refreshing to see a news reporter thats not a complete idiot when it comes to anything technical! I see that footage as a testament to how stong the king air is built.

"We understand the FAA will be in town tomorrow to conduct an investigation and the pilots should be here to *help* out as well."

--translation--

"The FAA will be reviewing logbooks with electron microscopes and the pilots are required to be there to avoid a violation on their records."

BTW, what do you think caused the cracked windscreen? Birds don't fly at 27K, right?

Two pilots make an emergency landing at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport after falling unconscious and falling 20,000 feet. Watch the story caught on tape from Heartland News at 10pm.

comon. you're supposed to be a journalist. Diction, anyone?

VERY COOL THOUGH! great find.

"BTW, what do you think caused the cracked windscreen? Birds don't fly at 27K, right?"

Ive had 3 cracked windshields in a B1900, and 2 in a BAe 146... every time I had a windshield crack, it has only been on layer of glass and hasnt caused any pressurisation problems. We did descend and reduce the cabin diff every time though.
You are right! Birds dont fly that high, these sort of things just happen...

On another point, if it was anything like the B1900 flying I did a few years ago... we didnt have an autopilot. If these guys had an autopilot, and it was on Alt hold... more than likely, they might have ended up meeting the same fate as Paine Stewart a few yrs back... scary. 'Falling' out of the sky, was probably the best thing that couldve happened for these lucky fella's...

Good point. I'm surprised it wasn't on autopilot. Very lucky and a great job by the pilots.

Maybe they slouched forward when they lost conciousness, hitting the yoke with enough force so that the AP disengaged itself?

Wrong.
Between 1990 and 2005, 276 bird strikes were reported between 10K-20K.
13 bird strikes between 20K-30K, and 1 strike ABOVE FL300!
I personally know of a goose that was hit at approx FL220.

No, the best thing would have been to put on the 02 mask and not take the nap. Time of useful consciousness at that alt is >3 minutes.

I'm very glad they made it down. I will be interested to see if the dive and/or the recovery did the damage.

early 200's had problems with the windshield cracking

as for the altitude...the GS went from 400 to less than 100 and the altitude from 27K to 7K in less than a minute.

I'm guessing a mixture of overreaction(#### WINDSHIELD GET HER DOWN, CLOUDED INTERIOR, THEN LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS after panic and worrying about other things besides getting oxygen on) but thats all guessing based on what i would guess happened...NO FACTS HERE!

whatever happened we may never know because these guys wont remember what happened.

Just another thought. If they commanded the emer descent and got to 7K in <3 minutes, they would have been at a breathable alt and wouldn't have passed out.

Are all the videos at that site playing at 3x speed for anyone else? They sounded like chipmunks and I couldn't understand any of the audio.
