One of the King Air gigs is gone but the other one I did contract work for was Bakersfield Air Charter out in Bakersfield, CA. Another contract I did was MarcAir in San Luis Obispo, CA in the PC12. I never went through an interview of any kind with any of them, I just knew some pilots there at the time and they vouched for me and went through a little training with me on the op specs. Like I said before, they all operate single pilot and every once in awhile have a customer that likes to see two warm bodies up front, so it was never anything I could do full time, even with 3 different companies. But I was really low time back then, so maybe if you have 135 mins they might fly you more and get you into the left seat full time.
My old boss just bought a 135 cert. (his current company is at SMX) but I don't know if he is going to move the base to Santa Maria or keep it where its at now (I think it was closer to the LA area, maybe CMA?) but as soon as I find out more I'll let you know. My guess is most, if not all, of the planes will be based at SMX though.
