Killer Headwind

Ugh, I guess we picked the wrong day to fly southwest-bound...

We were smokin' on the return trip, though!

No kidding! Full throttle in our 172s and I still would have been going backwards . . . One of those days when driving is actually worth it for us lowly GA folks.

I think he's saying northern Pacific. But I could be wrong.

AHH! A 200kt wind in the Northern Pacific! It's so clear now!

I am in your debt, Tony . . .

I think he's talking about the non pacific.

My groundspeed record in the CRJ is 625....jumped in a 150 knot tail wind and rode the chicken..wooo.

Sweet! It was also cool to fly from NRT to IAD and get there before I left.

yeah, makes for a loooooong day though

I'm such a dork that I got home, unpacked, got a nap, took a shower, and then went to the airport to do some flying of my own.

Think I'm addicted to this flying thing?

I could never do that, I'd crash. I can't sleep on planes at all.

My record is 167 knots dead nuts on the nose thanks to one of those hurry-canes last year enroute from Malpensa back to the Good Ole' US of A. Uggghhhh..... 7 hours to our first refueling stop.

I flew in a very spedy trip in a Bae-146 with FlyBe (formerly British European) JER - LGW first flight of the day, captain pushes back ready for field to open, gets cleared straight to the runway, with a take-off on the roll, then he says, we've got a tailwind and have made very good time out of JER, expecting a stacking delay for LGW though. But there was no stack, they took us straight in, horrible crosswind landing, 30 knots from the south on 8-26 runway, not pleasant, but good fun, I've never seen the runway whilst on final approach from the passenger seats!! We touched down and got into the gate 25 minutes ahead of schedule. The schedule allowed 1 hour gate to gate, the pilot then had to apologise for keeping us waiting on the plane, as the ground-crew were on tea-break!

Strongest that I can remember was 198-202 on the nose last year doing CLT - MDW. We could have made some time on the way back, but it seems clear skies in CLT call for speed restrictions.

Slowest groundspeed I've seen in the CRJ is 74. We did that going into DTW one morning last year. Suffice to say it was a very unsettling feeling.

The winds from ORF - IAH back in spring 2003 were 240 at 195 kts. made for a long flight right into the wind. Had a direct right after level off at FL350 of roughly Roanoke, VA area to Jackson, Ms of 700 miles and the computer showed 146 minutes to the station. My butt is sore just thinking about that flight. I flew with a fo that did YYZ - IAH in almost 4.5 hours airborne. Normally scheduled for about 3.5 enroute during the winter. Is it a good thing we fly the extended range regional jet?

Guessing that's Express Jet. I heard we did that route, and my mind reeled. I thought MEM-PHX (I think that one's Mesa) in an RJ was long....
