KGAI and...

I stopped by there before, they seemed OK from what I could tell. They had about 5 old 172s and a bare bones 79/80 model seminole with no gps or anything in it. I think they had a 182 also. I think you need to have your own insurance if you fly there though. You looking at flying with them or instructing there?

The Cheif CFI seems like a good guy. He offered me a CFI position there last summer. I turned it down because it is 60 miles from my home and they weren't busy enough to justify the drive. A friendly warning if you want a job there, they drug test all new hires. I don't know you from Adam, but atleast know that going in.

I don't use Montgomery Aviation for anything other than getting gas and charts, but they seem to have a decent number of students and they also seem to be pretty happy. I know a couple of guys have left there after getting offers for bigger and better things, so they're getting some work.

I was actually hired there in August of 2005 as a CFI, but I declined the offer. I live in Baltimore, so the drive and the fact that I wouldn't have a good student base right away was the deciding factor for me. I now work at KTHV which is 140 miles round trip each day, however, I am busy enough to justify the commute there each day. Busy to me means I have three students per day for atleast three days per week. Montgomery Aviation didn't have the student load I needed to go to work for them.

just be careful in FDK. that place is a hornets nest on the weekends. the pattern can get nuts.

Aww, come on, you're not afraid of a little traffic at FDK, are ya?

No, GAI is fine. It's nothing to write home about, but it's not bad, either. Believe you me, I've seen places that are a LOT less professional and I've flown into places where I'm like, oh, God, I hope I don't get stuck here. You won't get that feeling at GAI.

I got that feeling in GAI, and we ended up getting stuck there. I'm not sure if the FBO people are the same people that run the flight school, but we shutdown at 5:50 and were told we couldn't get gas, they close at 6 and then left us to fend for ourselves. Luckily the passenger we were flying gave us a ride to a hotel. The next morning it took us nearly half an hour to get gas, I remember there was a B-17 there and all of the employees were out side watching it instead of dealing with customers. Needless to say I wasn't very impressed with the place. But that was two years ago, maybe it's changed since then. It is the worst FBO I've been to.

Alex.

I had a student who was a CFI there (added a MEI/I) and I thought he was a really nice guy. He told me a lot about the place... most of it I don't remember except for the fact that he said they wouldn't give him a break on the Seminole for his MEI/I so he just came down to ATP in Manassas. Bob Gawler is the DPE on the field and is a really great guy.
