gettin' there.
This guy (me) is college bound, and I'm currently working on my PPL. I'm looking to start a career in aviation, and I intend on majoring in aviation (flight technology, operations).

Has anyone here attended Kent State or BGSU? If so, what'd you think of it?

For those who want to push ERAU, it is too far, as I hail from the great commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and it's too expensive as well.

Have you checked out the Community College of Beaver County? In my opinion it would be a great place to start, you can knock out all your ratings and get your associate degree for less than $25,000 (or less if your a resident of Beaver County). From there on out you could transfer somewhere to finish your bachelors, or go online through ERAU or UVU.

I visited it, and I applied there too, but I'd like to get the whole college experience. There's no housing, campus life, sports, etc.
 
CCBC is also comes with suicide inducing depression from no sun, hardly anyone over 18 or under 55 and quite literally nothing to do. I don't recommend it to anyone under the legal drinking age. If Corky Romano or whatever his name is is still there (God's gift to aviation) prepare to wear epaulettes and play airline pilot. When I did ATC there it got so ridiculous with the nagging rules that a former Lear F/O and King Air F/O who were going to the dark side wore their stripes while psuedo piloting in protest.

Don't have much to add about Kent or BGSU other than I ate at a Waffle House across from BGSU's football stadium once. Strange architecture abounds on that campus.
 
Middle Tennessee State University is also a great university, biggest one in the state with a beautiful campus with all the sports, intramurals, and pretty southern girls you can imagine. If you are looking for Aviation Tech its not all that expensive either when you compare it to other State colleges OOST
 
Just a suggestion from experience, go to a big college and get a backup degree. Big college = lots of pretty ladies. I came to Western Michigan University, intending to major in the same thing you are, and my first semester was a waste. Cost was insane, and the instructors are here to build time; I lost mine within a week of starting. They'll try and sell you on the fact that airlines will be chasing after you and your "Flight Science Degree." One problem, they won't be; no degree can guarantee you a job. After ignoring everyone that told me I should get a backup degree, I switched to Business Management as soon as class registration opened up for Spring. I was so impatient and wanted to get flying so badly that I had blinders on and wasn't looking at the big picture. Just looking at the what if, let's say you lose you medical at age 30, and need to support your family; what are you going to do? That flight science degree is useless outside of aviation.(not that valuable within aviation either) Enjoy college and fly at the local FBO on the side.

If you're going to disregard everything I just posted, I would suggest avoiding BGSU. My roommate is from that neck of the woods, and said there isn't a whole lot going for the area.
 
Have I agree. Go to the big college if you want but major in something useful. Fly at a local FBO with a seasoned instructor and save a lot of money

The experience lasts for 4 years. Debt lasts forever.














Ok not forever but it does last a long time. Go cheap. Community college for gen ed classes is a great idea. Probably not a good idea to do a flight program at a college if you will using loans.
 
I was in Kent's aviation program for over 3 years and I can vouch for it that it's a great program... but the flying is also overpriced. Also a degree in "Flight Technology" might as well be useless if you can't get a piloting job. Get yourself a degree in something non aviation related and your ratings on the side. I got a job as an air traffic controller while I finished my Commercial SEL. If I wasn't an air traffic controller I don't know how the heck I would have lived and paid my student loans off CFI money the last few years.
 
I went to Kent for my undergrad, great school and a great time. If you choose to go there please major in anything other than flight tech. I graduated in '09 so my info should be pretty current still. PM if you have any questions.
