KCDW to KLDJ question

Hi,
I need to make a short VFR flight from KCDW to KLDJ. Both of these are underneath the NY class B. I was wondering if someone can give me some tips on the best way to accomplish this. I was thinking to call up NY Approach on 126.4 and request a Class B transition to LDJ at 1500feet. Another pilot told me it's best to contact Newark Tower.

Technically I don't have to call up anyone as I can just fly underneath the Class B to get to LDJ, but it's such a narrow corridor between the Class B above and to the left, and Morristown Class D to the right. I think it would be safer to just ask for a transition through the Class B.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Felix

126.4 isn't the right freq, I don't think. I can't remember which is, but it's one of the Newark ones.

You've got a lot of options for the flight. Before you depart, you could ask CDW to coordinate a transition through MMU's D for you. They do that all the time. Alternatively, if you're comfortable with it, snake through the B ring at or below 1800 remaining SE of MMU's D. It's not THAT narrow, but I would be talking to someone. If you do that, just be careful - that 1800 ring drops to 1500 somewhere in there before LDJ. Of course, if neither of those options sound good, just go all the way around the outside. It's not that bad.

Non-certified answer here :) get up to 2500 transition mmu go under outer layer of the cake and enter ldj from the south. It's easy to spot. Do not forget to have fun.

Sounds like a rental/club checkout flight?

126.4 is the nobbi position which handles the area around dxr' try 126.7 that's EWR satellite they'll help you out or try EWR CBA on 127.85 good luck

Thanks everyone for the help.

highspeed: Yes it's a checkout flight. The checkout involves a flight to/from LDJ, but I never flew in there before and want to make sure i'm safe and following the correct procedure.

Paramus FC?

Yes, are you a member?

No, I've looked into that club and gone to a meeting or 2. Got approved by the board after the "interview" and all that. Planes seemed to be pretty nice and with 2 182s seemed like good options. The buy in is a bit steep, even if refundable (down econ prob more want to leave than join). And I work now at ACY, so I'm not up in N NJ but for Fri/Sat/Sun. And at ACY they have a club here, even though it's only 1 warrior.

I need to get back into flying, just haven't decided on the when/how part.

Yea I got approved by the board earlier this week. They just recently got a C172SP with Garmin's G1000 which is nice.

That's quite a commute to KACY. You must hate the Garden State Parkway :-)

So they now have 5 A/C or they got rid of one to take on the G1000? Not sure I'd even want to fly that anyway actually. The 172SP with dual 430 were more than capable for everything I did at riddle. The club though seemed to have agood group of people in it and pretty active. I've been dreaming of flying an L3 cub for a while now, might go up to Andover to do a BFR in one.

Yeah, From 145 down to 37....a long ride.

They got rid of one to get the G1000.

I'm actually getting my tailwheel endorsement at Andover. Flying their CubCrafters Top Cub with tundra tires. http://www.andoverflight.com/ It's a lot of fun. Got a flight tomorrow if the weather cooperates.

You can talk to EWR tower on their VFR Class Bravo frequency..... 127.85. The helicopters that are based at LDJ talk to them all the time transitioning through their airspace. You might be able to arrange for a handoff from CDW to EWR upon departure. I've flown over the numbers quite a few times heading to the Hudson River from MMU. Just keep your eyes open and outside, be sharp on the radio and listen to their ATIS...... 134.825 so you'll know which runway(s) they're using. You can always ask for a clearance into the Class Bravo airspace. Just make sure you hear the magic words. If you don't get it for whatever reason, refer to your plan B.

If you decide not to be on with ATC, I'd recommend approaching LDJ from the south as somone mentioned above. I don't have a chart in front of me but you'll have to keep ducking down as you get closer. LDJ's TPA is 800'. I started my training there. I think they used the Rahway Prison if you're approaching from the south as the point to be at 800 by. I remember being in the pattern a LDJ skirting around helicopters based there while at the same time checking out the jets on final for 4 at EWR. I'm sure we had to set off their TCAS at times.

Just some ideas for you to think about. I hope it helps a little.
