I wonder which tail number it is...I saw N707AR at Niagara Falls this past Fall and talked to the pilot's. Interesting guys with a very interesting job.

Thankfully we're just mourning the loss of a classic plane and not the loss of fellow aviators.

Re: KC135 down at Point Mugu

Is that water that it just happened to come to a rest in?

The area around Mugu NAWS - especially south and west - is a little wet. Not like wetlands, but there's water around. I think "tidal estuary" is the proper term. I think.

It's right by the beach. Also, socal has been pretty wet in the last few days, which is my intial guess at the cause....

Glad everyone got out. On a side note, Omega's airplanes are pretty neat. I know a dude who got to ride along in one and he told me it still had Pan Am logos all over the interior and a galley fully furnished with Pan Am kitchenware.

Pretty lucky too. If you look at the pics, you can see that the ARFF vehicles are restricted to staying on the hard surface and can't really get to the wreckage without getting bogged down. Hence the firefighters on the handline on the upwind side applying foam to the leaking JP-5 surrounding the fuselage. I imagine the crew were able to extricate themselves, as a rescue would've been difficult in the area the 707 ended up.
