Hey Guys,

I want to get your opinion of Kalitta. I see that they have a flight follower position open and can't find much about the company except for the couple of accidents they had in 2008. I've heard that they have some suspect operations going on (ie taking off over MTOW, etc.) Can anyone shed some light on these guys from Michigan? Curious to know if it's even worth sending my application.

No Suspect operations everything is by the book. But the work you do is extremely tough flight planning flights into airports at mins and trying to get as much freight on as possible. You work 10 hour shift 4 on 4 off you can work extra days but you only get straight pay since you are salary. Usual day you do anywhere between 4 -8 releases and on busy days 10 or 11 isnt out the question. These are all likely to be international flights. The experience you get there is pretty good though. NOPAC, CENPAC, North Atlantic, Europe, Asia, Africa, South America. You name it they have been there. Good bit of experienced Girls and Guys there willing to teach you if you are willing to learn and do your job.

I know that they run the 74 classic and NG. Any plans on replacing the fleet? I would imagine that when more NG models become available they will use them to replace the classics.
 
Don't bother if you're not 23. I applied about four times and was later clued in that I hadn't read the last few lines of the "job requirements" section. Still might look into it again. The only "bad" thing I heard, and keep in mind I only heard it through the grapevine, is that you're not always carrying what has been approved for carry on the overfly permit. There was a flight that had to divert a few years ago and I guess a search of the cargo reviled HAZMAT on board.

Kind of makes sense given the requirements for a dispatch license...
 
You'd actually be surprised at how many 121 supplemental carriers don't have that requirement. Especially if you've already completed all the dispatcher requirements and your ticket is being held by the FAA until your 23 birthday.

However, I've heard that the FAA is starting to recommend that 121 supplemental carriers only hire people who are in fact 23.
 
Read the ymight be a new rule that all 121 supplemental carriers will need Aircraft Dispatchers and not Flight Followers. As far as Kalitta goes there is alot of people in the office that have their dispatchers license and not working as one in the office. If you dont have it and want to atleast get your foot in the door they promote from the Ops Assist position. Work that for 6 months and then you can move to either permits, crew scheduling or ULD. As far as flight followers they have been hiring off the street the last few times. But wouldnt be surprised if the hire 1 external and promote 1 from within this time. But cant say for sure what they will be doing.
