This happened to me yesterday while landing at KIWA

Luckily airport operations came to tow us away fairly quickly but it got me wondering what should you do if this happened at a non towered airport without any services?

Shove it off the runway.

what type of a/c? Looks like a 'good as it can be' ending.

For your question on what you should do.... At the airport I was s flight instructor (uncontrolled with no major services) there was a plane that geared up one day. We just made a call to the airport manager and he issued a NOTAM saying the runway was closed.

Sucks! glad everyone is alright.....I'm at an untowered field, and things like this happen sometime. make a call to ctaf to tell anyone inbound, call the fbo on unicom so they can immediately call airport office, notam issued, then line service from FBO will come and tow you...and charge you lots and lots of money to do so.

It was a bonanza. They let the tires get down to barely marginal before they even consider changing them.

Hmm. Barely marginal. Is that a new term to describe airworthiness?

I don't mean to bust your balls, but I'd be downing an airplane if I did a preflight and saw tires looking like that.

On a piston single?

I see no cord showing, looks good to me.

the only time it happened to me it was a nose wheel. I taxied slowly ahead to a crossing runway that was not in use and asked (towered) if I could shut down there. It was a busy airport and didn't want to shut down the active runway. of course they let me since doing so did not block the active or any taxi way. Its still interesting standing on a runway with a broke plane.

Yup, true. I have had almost completely bald tires in the training environment and they have yet to of posed a problem. Now the stupid tubes are annoying as the valve stems keep getting sheared off.

The picture shows one of my two flat tires. This one happened on the last landing of the lesson. I thought my student was doing something weird and asked ask why he was doing that. This was the result of the tube twisting and then shearing the valve stem off on the last landing. It sucks.

I also had that happen to me in KIWA a few years ago. There was a lot of debris around and we hit something while taxiing out for takeoff. They Airport Ops guy was really quick and really cool. It really spoils your day though.

Was this a result of a sideload landing?

No not side loaded. I was practicing power off 180 and had a nice smooth landing using normal brakes then that happened both me and my instructor were surprised that it even happened.
