Just in case..

I flew with one of the pilots who flew one of the jets from the movie. Woo! I'm not sure if "Grinch" is in the credits though.

I served on an aircraft carrier (USS Ranger CV-61) for a year. I used to get a blast out going up to "Vulture's Row" and watching flight ops at all different times of day. Those F14's scream off of the flight deck. We actually had a plane lose one of it's missles as it was landing. It slid right over the side of the ship. That set off a few alarms on board the ship. </end ramble>

Is the USS Ranger no more? I used to always see it docked at NAS North Island in San Diego bay years back.

Nope, she is long gone. Decom'd in 1993 right after I got off the ship. That's where I was at NAS North Island. I believe the Kittyhawk, Lincoln, and soon to be Reagan will be homeported there. They were phasing out the conventional carriers. I was one of many that made the final cruise:

Yokosuka, Japan - Pusan, South Korea - Singapore (we sailed right past thanks to Saddam) - Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. - Jebel Ali, U.A.E. - Perth, Austrailia New Years Eve '92 - Sydney, Austrailia - Pearl Harbor, HI (my first tour of duty).

Oops, I forgot to put that in there. My brain is moving faster than my fingers. Yes, she is parked at Bremerton last I heard.

Unless it's changed recently, NI is home to Stennis, Nimitz, and Reagan.

I doubt it has changed. I was just going off of my memory from when Ieft in 93. The Kittyhawk was there and some of the talk at the time was bringing a couple of the new/newer carriers there. Is the Reagan there yet? I know it had started its trip around, but was not sure if they have arrived yet.

Kitty Hawk was indeed there at that time. She now serves as the Japan-based carrier last I saw.

but I'd certainly hate to have to drag his 250lb body out of the left seat and learn how to use a tiller on the fly.

Did we fly together Doug?

Not only that, what is the 27-Charlie class (smaller) aircraft carrier in the top of the pic? I'm not sure which Battleship that is due to the angle of the bow number. The smaller ship next to it with the 10-series number is a Knox class frigate.

I believe the battleship is the USS Iowa. Of the last 4 BBs left in service, the New Jersey is a museum, the Missouri is a museum in Hawaii, and the Wisconsin is moored on the east coast. I believe the pic is of the Suisun Bay reserve fleet near San Francisco.

It's the prefix for battleships, spoken as sort of a shorthand.....the "battleship"....the "BBs."

USS Iowa is BB-61.
