Are you guys allowed to call scheduling while on reserve and ask to be released early? Got this email today:

Effective immediately, all reserve crewmembers are on duty as scheduled unless otherwise notified. Crewmembers shall refrain from calling to be release early.
Thank you for your cooperation.

I believe over here at RW, our contract says that if we are on our last day of a reserve sequence, we can call scheduling up to 4 hours before the reserve shift ends and ask for early release...depending on the coverage, they will let you go early...

At XJT I know of no rules regarding this. We can access the reserve numbers on our scheduling system (CAL side of things 75% of pilots) and see how many reserves are available for a given day. If it's above the min number they have set you can most likely get off, if not I doubt it...and if you're a Captain, it's never gonna happen!! But yes, you can make the call.

There is no silly rule like that at JetBlue. I could call crew services on any reserve day to ask to be released. Gotta use your head though. Check the reserve numbers, open trips, etc. before you call them. If the numbers don't support letting you go, you just gotta suck it up.

Say you're a CA at XJT and you have reserve today that ends at 5:00. It's now 2:00 and you haven't been called yet. If you call scheduling and asked to be released would they usually release or hold you on

We don't have the rule of not calling here at 9E.....yet. That memo you guys got was probably typed by the same management that is possibly getting ready to send us a similar one. As it is, if people call to get released early, scheduling probably just laughs and hangs up on them.

Pinnacle sent out a similar memo about not calling crew planning to ask about the status of vacation bids a few years ago. Of course, I responded by calling them about two dozen times a day until they were released. Note to Phildo: never tell a disgruntled pilot to not do something.

You can DO whatever you want. Whether or not anyone would be responsive, or better yet, responsive in a positive way, that is another question. Feel free to make whatever requests you feel like you need to. The only dumb question is the one that went unasked.

It depends. I've been released early once when I was trying to make an early flight, but I don't try that often either. In nearly six months of CA reserve at XJT, there have been only three or four days I didn't get used.

We have no such prohibition here and the contract specifically allows us to call scheduling and ask to be released.

Baronman hit the key points... We can call anytime to get released... but most likely will only get released if there is coverage over and above the min. levels.

As for your Captain question... it varies.

If the min level for the day is 6 Reserves... and there are 3 on call as well as 1 ARC (Airport Ready Crew)... then "technically" they are below coverage. But... if you are off within a few hours... and they only have 1 or no trips in open time... and there is no weather hitting any of the hubs... then you can actually get released when coverage is below min. levels.

Also... if it's your last day of reserve... and you are not used by 6:00 PM... then you are automatically "off". No need to call. It's just a contract "gimme".

While at rsv at 9E I got off a few times early to make my ride home. Kinda surprised a company would send out a memo stating otherwise.

Of course!

I had a reserve period scheduled for yesterday, FEB 16. I called them at 10PM on the 14th and they released me from the 16th at that time. Two days in advance, released from phone availability. That's a bit of an odd case, but it happened.

Let's make it simple. Many years ago I worked in crew scheduling at Pinnacle. Schedulers release you based on 1) how they feel 2) How comfortable they are with their job 3) What their sup says. Call them, press them, by God, ask them. Reserve on sched is at the mercy of men and women that were working at home depot or Mcd's 2 weeks ago. Manipulate this system as you desire. Please, do not hesitate to challenge these newbies that have been put in charge of ruining your life.
Regards.

So in that spirit ... I assume you're getting a wage to sit there and wait for a call. If you get released early, do you still get paid for the full time you were scheduled?

(I really doubt that's the case, given the amount of frugality I've seen at airlines, but might explain the memo.)

There are two different questions there, will you pay me, and will you release me. I dont know what airline you work for, but you will lose credit at mine if you are released more than 1 hour early. Will you be released, that depends on the day and situation. Like I said, if you want to be released, the only dumb question is the one that went unasked.
