Jury duty

Way back when I was in college I was called once. Over Christmas Break, so I was home. Also it was a blizzard (in Portland, OR, which can't handle snow) and I was dreadfully sick. Ended up being selected for a jury for some drunk kid who fled an accident and Failed to Perform the Duties of a Driver or somesuch (the DUI was handled separately). We deliberated for about an hour, but only because we felt the obligation to; the guy was clearly guilty. I felt bad for the poor, poor, public defender... though I'm grateful that service exists.

Anyway, the jury was kinda fun. Getting around Portland in the snow, being sick, and losing valuable holiday days were not.

I wish that was the case here...I had it three times in the last 5 years I worked for the PD. NOT A CHANCE I'm getting on a jury and can't get excused. I got paid for it of course but what a ridiculous waste of the taxpayers cash....

I've always called and told them I'm a cop, and they tell me not to even bother showing up, every time. 100% chance I would be dismissed.

I've done jury duty twice, had to serve on one jury, and made it to the last round of potential jurors on the second.

The trial I served on was a waste of time, since the police officer had arrested a woman for DUI... on the basis of her throwing a cigarette out her car window, which bounced off his police motorcycle. Her BAC was well under the legal limit, and there was no real evidence she was impaired, so we took all of 10 minutes deliberating to decide she wasn't guilty.

The worst part about jury duty was dealing with the other people in the jury pool, since one group had a woman who kept trying to get people to invest in something that was probably a Ponzi scheme, and the other group had a self proclaimed "poet" who would read his horrible poetry at anyone that stood still for more than about 10 seconds.

I commuted for a time at ExpressJet and it was a transcon commute, but I had great seniority on the end I was commuting to.

During that time I was only awarded one single trip that was fully uncommutable on both ends.

As luck would have it, I was called for jury duty at the federal court in center city Philadelphia.

The only uncommutable trip I ever had commuting at that airline was dropped, and I did not work jury duty after showing up on the first day. By the time I was released from that it was too late to commute out to do what would have been the remainder of the trip out west, so I didn't fly any of it.

It all worked out great, and I have yet to partake in society still, years later.

Just had it yesterday, with delays in JFK due to the TFR didnt get home and to bed till like 2am, show time for jury duty was 7:45. Just sat around, watched a couple movies they showed and dismissed around 2:30. If I was smarter I would've traded into something on that day since we're pay protected.

I had jury duty for two weeks. First day I went to the courthouse for orientation. Second day I had to go to the courthouse to potentially be on a trail but wasn't picked as a juror. The rest of the time I called in every night to potentially be on a jury but they never used me.

I got my first letter for jury duty yesterday. I'm currently working 500 miles from home on a long term project (been here 18 months, 12-15 more left to go). Was afraid it would take an act of congress to get out of it.

Called the court clerk this morning and gave her my name and report date:

"Are you going to be available that day?"

Uhhh.....no. I've actually been, umm, working out of...

"Ok hon, have a nice day *click*".

I thought my wife was playing a sick joke on me this morning. I just got a letter in the mail today and.... I've been selected for jury duty! Nooooooo! Jetcareers jinxed me! I had just requested that week off for vacation too!

The courts will only reimburse me $20 a day. I will be getting my base pay from the company, and will be missing out on any potential day rate pay (bummer!).

I got summoned recently. I looked into their pay, and found it to be unacceptably low. I also looked into my company. While they will grant me leave, I wouldn't get paid for the trip. The company I work for flies to the town the courthouse is in that I list as my residence. I called in and said we are short staffed (true) and that it could be a service interruption to the town if I were to have to be away for 2 weeks. She told me no worries you're off, have a good one.

got called up twice, both times came close to being drafted but I was never selected. Still free agent and looking...

Where I am, you can request a one time only change of service dates. I didn't mess with it but it's not a good deal of your service times fall on days off or vacation. You might see about moving it a couple months down the road and make sure you are working when the time comes.

I had jury duty for like 3 months just ending a couple of weeks ago. Every night I was supposed to call in to a line to see if they needed me in the morning. Our CBA has pay protection for up to 7 days of jury duty per year, I got selected for one trial (DUI case) but I got really tired of calling in or coming in to be dismissed so I just stopped calling and coming in about one and a half months in.

Jury clerks are usually far more willing to defer than to cancel. But the feedback on this post would indicate to the contrary.

Avoid Grand Juries like the plague. They can sit every day for weeks!

Lucky: Every time I've been called it was at the old address just after I moved hundreds of miles. Excuses don't get much better...
