Jumpseating ?

I'm going to be commuting from OKC-DTW. I now commuting isn't the preferred method but right now that's about my only option. However, my biggest question is do I have to call and list for the jumpseat or do I just show up to the gate? I've heard that SWA and JetBlue require you to call ahead (I think it was those two and of coarse cargo). What if I missed my airlines flight and I'm going to have to use a second company that is leaving in like 45 minutes? Do I still need to call or can I go to the gate and ask/beg?

It depends on the Airline, but I always ask to list at the ticket counter or at the gate.

You may want to buy tickets or move, but if you have to jumpseat, give yourself plenty of time. Flight loads have been rather full lately and I've talked to quite a few pilots that have had a tough time catching rides.

If I know the phone number to call to list, I'll call (though if I miss my first choice flight and have 45 minutes to get to the next one, I usually won't bother). If I don't know the non-rev number, I just go to the gate and ask to be listed. Not really a big deal.

Most companies would prefer you to list ahead of time, but I have just shown up and either had the ticket counter or gate agent add me at the last minute. Not alot of direct flights between OKC and DTW. Go to passrider.com and you can find the flight schedule between any city pairs.

SWA gate agents get a little cranky if you haven't listed but they'll put you on. The non-rev number has been a gi-freakin-normous pain in the ass to get through to these last couple of weeks.

DO NOT list if you're traveling on AirTran, they prefer you to just show up at the gate.

I've never had a problem with just showing at the gate with any other airlines, but it's nice sometimes to know the flight loads ahead of time and get in the system.

From memory here...

United, Continental, US Airways and Delta are ok with you just walking up to the gate. American wants you to list ahead of time (but they can list you if the gate agent is in a good mood and you are on plan C or D or E.

Southwest likes you to list ahead of time but I never actually have and haven't had a problem.

Virgin America and Airtran (until they become Southwest anyway) are cool with listing at the gate.

Frontier wants you to list ahead of time and the gate will normally ask you to call if there is time. If not they will list you. JetBlue is the same.

FedEx you have to list ahead of time... no other way. Same thing with Brown and the ACMI carriers.

I don't have any experience with Allegiant, but an FO I just flew with uses them and lists ahead of time.

No idea about any of the others.
