Jumpseat ?

@Dan208B

Complicated probably doesn't scratch the surface:D

I think that the implementation of the jumpseat reservation system for AA pilots took up a lot of time and IT resources. Really didn't give an opportunity to change much else. That and at the time, the APA BOD was heavily entrenched with LAA members who didn't want to change anything.

Remember, up until recently, AA planes would leave jumpseaters at the gate with plenty of empty seats because of an archaic system that limited the number of pilots they could carry from an airline to the number of jumpseats installed on the airplane. LAA was never commuter friendly because most of them have never commuted.

I'll repeat this again, as I do in any thread that ends up dealing with AA jumpseat listings:

MyIDTravel and the Reservations phone number are the preferred methods for listing; however, if you can't make a listing in advance, gate agents are REQUIRED to make a listing for you at the gate.

That is not entirely accurate. AA has/had two type of Jumpseat agreement. Limited and unlimited. They would take an unlimited number of jumpsesters from the unlimited category. But the limited guy would only be accepted by the number of JS installed in the aircraft. If an unlisted guy beat you to the gate you weren't getting in. The only way to get a limited guy on was to remove all the unlimited guys, put the limited guy on then put all the unlimited guys back on. Pita that was time consuming.

I still have been left at the gate by AA and DL due to piss poor gate agents

@Bandit_Driver

I was simply pointing out that LAA was never commuter friendly. The limited/unlimited policy reflected that mindset.

Thankfully, that went away with the merger and everyone is now unlimited.

Yeah it was ridiculous. I know AA JSC fought it for years and tried to get as many carriers as he could into unlimited status.

I thankfully have had some strong capts that flight to get me on AA flights after the gate agent said he didn't have time to deal with jumpseaters and won't take a delay for us even though we were there an hour prior. Captains refused to leave without us.

I still do that :D

Does AA still have that really short list of who they allow to jumpseat internationally?

Yes.

And any airline on any given day can be a problem.

I just got hosed by Delta, who I've never had an issue with, last week. Ended up having to buy a zed fare to get on the plane.

Just have backups when you can and if you really need to be somewhere, buy a ticket.

File a complaint with your union so the JSC can work on it.

Why do people say stuff like this instead of just being helpful? I really don't understand some pilots and how negative they are.

Perspective.

Flying an aircraft that doesn't have mixtures, props and throttles to contend with, that runs (in some cases) hundreds of millions of dollars, never honestly having to work outside in the winter chill and earning a higher than median income is enough to jade almost anyone! :)

I'm wary (jaded?) about online listings for jumpseats. Did that for a Spirit flight from LGA-DTW and thought I was all set with my pilot jumpseat listing and no one else listed. Wife and kid already had confirmed tickets, so after they're on, I'm still waiting and the agent tells me no nonrevs. I said I was a pilot and then she asked why I hadn't filled out a jumpseat form from her. Aroo? I wish I knew that I also had to fill out a JS form. I filled it and got on. Still, what's the point of an online listing then?

Because you do not want a contract gate agent who couldn't care less about passengers much less non-rev passenger trying to figure out how to list a jumpseater who doesn't have a listing. Yes they are supposed to list you when you show up if you don't have a listing. That gate agent probably won't be around in a month and they just got hired last week.

They're more concerned about getting that cabin door closed 30 minutes prior to departure than getting paying passengers aboard even if 100 of the 230 checked in paying passengers are on the wrong side of the 2 hour wait security line.

Did you check in with the gate agent when you got to the gate? A online listing doesn't check you in. As far as the agent is concerned you're just a listing and haven't checked in, i.e. a no show.

It all a big game. Most of the time you win but sometimes you lose for the dumbest of reasons.

Jumpseat info is a good site.

Exactly. I think a few guys at my shop have lost perspective, and make themselves miserable.

Yeah I did. I told her the wife and kid were confirmed tickets, and I was a jumpseater who had listed online. This was in LGA back in 2014, and the gate agent could care less (was her attitude).

Now I use Frontier out of TTN for DTW, and the whole experience is far better than dealing with anything at LGA (let alone Spirit). I just hope ya'll don't make it worse when you two merge ;)

Someone should tell the gate agents in ORD that. I am 100% sure they didn't get the memo. They make the old UAX agents in IAD look like Santa Claus. Not only will they not list you, they will even leave you there standing at the freaking gate counter for 40 mins with a listing already made because "they were too busy," also leaving several paying pax and nonrevs AT THE GATE behind to close the door ten early.

And that's why, Captains, we preflight our jumpseat.

Capts should be making the walk. PLEASE MAKE YOUR JUMPSEAT COMMITTEE AWARE OF THIS.
