Jumpseat in cockpit?!?!

Who??? Just kidding - relax a little pal. I've never denied anyone the jumpseat. Just an offhanded remark that probably displays my personal thoughts on the situation - yet my jumpseat is always open to the brothers and sisters out there.

Chris - flaps up, after landing checklist - relax.;)

I was just kidding around with you doof :p

You can jumpseat anytime on my flight deck if:

your a 121 crewmember on the CASS system AND fly for an outfit
that is ALPA or TEAMSTERS.

If your not the above, I have to politely decline the invitation.

Something to me seems a little backward about denying a Colgan or Skywest pilot but letting a GoJetter on....:)

Oh man, I was all over the jumpseat rules a few years ago.

At Frontier, only Frontier pilots were allowed in the jumpseats on normal legs. Also mecahanics, dispatchers, FAA and even weight and balance ops guys were allowed if they were to work the w&b manually on that flight.

On part 91 legs anyone allowed on the aircraft was allowed in the cockpit. Those are rare flights though!

See post #19:yeahthat:

No, I saw it...I just wanted to be obnoxious and point out that GoJets is Teamsters, and they're much more of a union-busting airline than Colgan or Skywest. I have *no* problem with denying the jumpseat to scabs, and I completely respect the captain's authority to control the jumpseat access.

Do you wear a headset in the jumpseat and have any convo with the CA/FO?

Yeah, I got given one when I sat jumpseat. As a jumpseater sometimes you are required for critical things, like passing manuals from the library, and help trying to find the fix you are flying too.

Also your help is appreciate with the pre-take off sandwiches!! YUM YUM!

Or to clarify what EatSleepFly said, we work for a 135 company in the CASS system. We've only got one recip (with Southwest) but we've had good luck getting on with a few other companies (US Airways comes to mind). While I won't personally try to JS into an airport that isn't served by Southwest, it IS nice to think that we have a few more options when trying to get home or get back to work by being in CASS, but as you stated it's up to the captain to let us on or not.

So far I've been treated better as a jumpseater than I have as a paying passenger and I've got nothing but great things to say about all the captains that have let me on their flights so far!

The average jet (modern) cokpit is not that loud so you should be fine talking to the pilots. The headset is once again for communication with ATC, dispatch, ops and ...

I also don't think you can plug in headsets in the jumpseat.

There's a headset for the jumpseater, at least on Southwest's 737's.

Most carriers have the headsets in the cockpit for the jumpseater(s). Your considered part of the crew environment. But when I'm jumpseating up front, usually I just have the headsets on while in the critical phases of flight.

The ERJ's jumpseat has it's own audio panel, so you can listen to an AM radio station if the crew is kind enough to tune it in for you on the ADF reciever. That cockpit is pretty loud due to the wind noise; you'll want to wear a headset up there. I carry a pair of my own cloth ear seal covers so it doesn't feel so nasty using a borrowed headset, plus they do make wearing it a lot more comfortable.

When i was a ramp agent for colgan a little over a year ago 2 captains let me jumpseat with them. Back then most of them said you needed a letter from Tom Brink to do it. Like I said though 2 of them were really cool, they knew I was working on my ratings and snuck me in.

PS anyone at DFW simuflite today?

Yeah please never release their names for the sake of them...

Dont want anyone ever in trouble.

I finally got to jumpseat instead of riding in back. It was actually a Delta 767 and it awesome. Doug your a lucky guy, wish the Slaab had half of the stuff the 76 had. Plus those auto-throttles were a trip!
