Jump starting airplane with a truck!

I guess i can add myself to the list of people that have done this. KBKL in the winter with wind coming off the lake, absolutely horrible experience. And yes the placement of the battery in the cherokee was absolutely awful to get it done.

Done it a couple times. Jumped a Warrior off a Chevy once. That didn't work too well since it was a 24 volt system - started eventually, though.

When I ran the flight school we had one CE-150 that wouldn't hold a charge in the cold. Any time it was colder than about 35 we'd have to jump it off my Camry. When jumping a CE-150 you want to be the guy in the cockpit. Trust me.

Speaking of trying to hand prop. I have alot of experience hand proping a cub that I rent. So the first thing I tried was to hand prop the cherokee with another pilot who was there at the controls. Let me tell you. Trying to hand prop a 0-320 (that has the 160hp upgrade which means high compression cylinders) isnt fun at all. First attempt I thought the blade was going to cut into my hand from the hard pull it takes to turn it over. After the second attempt I was just like this is stupid bring the truck over. Part of the upgrade we are going to do with the new battery that is going to be put in is a external jump port that would be behind the wing.

Still only 8.5:1 :)

Funny...I was just going through Sporty's catalog last night and noticed this. (I was circling items of personal interest, given the time of year, with the hopes that "right" people would see my "hints"...but that's another story...)

I have GPU jumped my share of aircraft as a line guy. The C172 and C152 have plenty of room behind the props. If I recall correctly the Cherokee 6 doesn't have a lot of room but it can be done safely. Isn't the PA-44 plug ahead of the props on the nose?

Some I didn't really like were the Metroliner and the DC-3. The metroliner beats you up pretty bad with prop blast and heat. The DC-3 is just creepy with those huge windmill-like props that arc just about where you stand as you when you unplug. The new T-6 turboprop isn't that great either come to think about it. Lots of prop blast and really warm exhaust. Most of the time the crew leaves the prop feather though so that's nice...

Most fun plane I ever GPU'd was a P-51. Guy came in, and tried to crank with the battery, but it just wouldn't go. Nothing quite like standing 3 feet from that thing when they start. That was the one time that everyone wanted to use the GPU.
