Judge Approves End of United Pension Plan

[ QUOTE ]
Jack Carriglio, an attorney for retired United pilots, said the airline should be ashamed of the agreement and warned of the consequences among angry employees

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't think the company or any US corp. gives a rats as*s about feeling ashamed of something they did that was wrong. From what I hear, the pilots are not going to cave this time.

United should be ashamed ...

the judge should be ashamed ...

... and I support all United employees to find work elsewhere and leave as soon as possible to leave management with no one to fly the planes, load the bags, load the pax, or pass out tickets!

[/ QUOTE ]

Yup, but unfortunately, if there are people willing to do PFT/PFJ, then there are surely people out there willing to work fo next to nothing for the "privledge" of being a United FO.

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't think PFT has anything to do with a major US airlines pension going down the tube. United was on its way down before 9/11 and mgmt there did nothing to stop the bleeding quick enough. By that I don't mean outsourcing their work to the regionals. I don't think this is the end of the big U. And I don't think this is the last of the great american pilot career. Give it time. When things turn around, look for the pilot unions to ask for raises and better QOL again. It's not over! They've fought too hard for decades to give it all up in a few years. It's a cycle.

WHY IS EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION IN AMERICA STILL SKYROCKETING???????

[/ QUOTE ]

Of course its going to go up, they are the ones that decide how much it will be. This country is heavily based on a financial class structure. The rich get richer, the poor stay poor. Just come down to Orange County where I live. Nothing but strip mall after strip mall being opened up with the same damn shops being put in everyone on of them. No room for small business, and all the same crap.

Are these two statements in some way related? Just curious.

By almost any measure the standard of living in the United States is one of the highest in the world.

I dunno. I had a very interesting conversation about the standard of living in Switzerland and in terms of employment, vacation, compensation and especially health care, we can do a lot better.

Unfortunately, we're not headed the right direction either.

As long as we've got a public that says, hell, yeah, drop that price of the stuff at Wal-Mart down another nickel and I don't care if my neighbor gets his job shipped off to China, we're going to see more and more good paying jobs sent overseas.

It's funny. People talk about, well, we're making things cheaper for the consumer, and yes, we are.

Except if we keep on sending high paying jobs overseas and replace them with Wal-Mart jobs, the consumer ain't gonna be able to buy those lower priced goods without taking on a boatload of debt.

But that's a whole nother ball of wax.

I'm not sure I should talk. I just got my AOPA credit card, and I'm very excited. But here's the deal with that one. I'm going to use MBNA as my beoatch. I'm going to use it only for things that qualify for the AOPA rebate, and I'm going to pay my balance off at the end of every month.

I'm going to be that one bastard that makes MBNA pay ME to carry their plastic!

And I invite everyone here to join me!

The only problem is that Jethro next door that wants his toothpaste $.05 cheaper doesn't realize that the combination of sales/state/federal tax went up at least $.10 to support the corporation that sold it.

Between average commute times, lack of any 'real' vacation, working hours, laughable education system and good but tragically expensive, I think the salad days of being a wealthy world power are teetering on extinction.

But I think I just found myself a new topic for Arguepolitics!

Ah, yes, if only we could be more, European.

[ QUOTE ]
The people of France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands may be angry about globalisation or ultra-liberalism or immigration, but this reflects a deeper malaise. Their living standards are falling, their pensions are in danger, their children are jobless and their national pride is turning into embarrassment and even shame. In sum, they feel that their countries, which numbered among the world’s richest and most powerful nations as recently as the middle of the last decade, have gone to the dogs under the leadership of the present generation of politicians. And, at least in the economic sense, they are absolutely right.

The relative economic decline of “old” Europe since the early 1990s — especially of Germany and Italy, but also of the Netherlands and France — has been a disaster almost unparalleled in modern history. While Britain and Japan certainly suffered some massive economic dislocations, in the early 1980s and the mid-1990s respectively, they never experienced the same sort of permanent transformation from thriving full-employment economies to stagnant societies where mass unemployment and falling living standards are accepted as permanent facts of life.

[/ QUOTE ]

Europeans are shouting 'no' for one reason: it's their economies, stupid

At least they rise up and speak up against it. Meanwhile, here in the states, we're maxing credit cards, leveraging HELOCS on massively overinflated home values to maintain a certain lifestyle.

I've already maxed mine - MBNA paid me $250 to use their credit card this year.

If you're SteveC, an extra $250!

I dunna, maybe it's just me, but I love being the one who plays the big companies instead of them playing me!

It can be done, you just gotta be smart about it. SteveC sure has!

Ummm......let's not advertise this too much, O.K.? We need plenty of people getting suckered into paying the high interest rates by keeping a balance on their cards, otherwise we'll be out on our ears. MBNA makes plenty of money off from the people that pay their interest rates and service charges that they'll never miss the cash I got from them. But if everyone starts paying their card's balance every month and maxing out rebates???? Sacre bleu!

No worries, bro. Everyone knows that it's bad to run a balance on their credit cards.

But most people do anyway!

As most people are aware I work for a bank. My bank is the largest supplier of credit cards in the world...period!
I work in credit dept. now so I do NAL (New Account Lending) and PRR (Portfolio Risk Review).
Steves right...the bank loves customers who carry balances and consitantly pays late.
The fees man are outragous it's $39.00 for a late fee,$39.00 for being overlimit and subprime rates of up to 29.99%.
When we review a persons credit if they pay late but always pay we will look past them (sometimes) cause point blank there making money for the bank.
However (and not always) someone who is actually responsible and pays off their balance each month can get looked at harder.
When we review their account because there not making any money for the bank.
Crazy ain't it...?

It's true. Their rejection of the EU means they demand a short work week, 6 weeks vacation and early retirement paid by the government. And a booming economy! That's why the euro is falling like a rock, it's now evident Europe can't be reformed. C'est la vie.
