John Travolta irks Qantas crews.......

It's freaking spelled QANTAS people. There is no U. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Plus, you do realize he has done a lot of positive things for aviation history and museums.

Very much so he has. Which is why Im wondering why there is so much Haterade going on in here.

So far as his ability as a pilot, I guess no one remembers him bringing the G-II into Washington National with an emergency of complete electrical failure in night/IMC in December 1993 (probably not as most of you were still in gradeschool then)? From accounts of a couple of guys I know who have flown with him, he takes flying seriously and is very procedures oriented.

And plus, its not like the airline pilot profession is some godly Holy Grail thats looked highly upon anymore, as much as its been diluted in the past decade or so. Lighten up people.

There's a lot more in this world to be pissed off about than this. He's a guy who likes aviation and got to do a commercial. I doubt anybody riding Qantas is wondering when John Travolta is coming to fly their plane. This my friends, this is small potatoes. Use the energy from being pissed off at this to worrying about gas prices instead :)

yet he has no problem wearing that Quantas costume with 4 stripes and telling everyone this is your "captain" . Yeah if I were a real Qantas Captain I'd probably be offended.

Check this out:

This burger joint in Chandler, AZ. There's a guy in there wearing a doctor uniform, and the scantily-clad waitresses in there are claiming to be "your nurse" and are dressed in nurse uniforms. And the doctor has no problem being dressed in a real labcoat. If I were a real doctor or nurse, Id probably be offended.

Every professional out there with a uniform must get pretty upset around Halloween. Freaking kids think they can just put on X uniform for a night of fun without committing YEARS to earn it. Degrades every profession out there. Can't have them thinking they can grow up and do any of that.

I'd quite enjoy walking around the FBO with eleventy billion stripes and getting into my 172. It mocks both JEEET pilots that can't take a joke and instructors that wear stripes at the same time!

Dude,

The guys a tool! Take a poll of real airline pilots, not just aviation enthusiasts. At least 70% say D Bag. He's pretending (not acting) to be something he is not. I've seen him on several talk shows as John Travolta, not an actor, tell people he is a Qantas captain.

I'm an airline pilot and I really don't have much of a problem with him at all.

Personally, I wish we had more people that at least tried to represent aviation in a positive light. Probably pull more non-career oriented enthusiasts back into becoming weekend warriors and give at least an image other than fat/bald/old grumpy guy in line at the SLC Sbarro or sunglasses-on-forehead spiked hair leather SS-like jacketed 20 year old.

He might not be the optimum image, but he's recognizable and somewhat universally liked.

I don't doubt his enormous love for aviation or the fact that he has done many goodwill and relief missions with his aircraft. I'm sure if many of us had that kind of money we'd be the same way. Something about him just really rubs me the wrong way. When I see him in that uniform, which he always has on around anything remotely related to aviation, it just comes across as a typical self promoting <edit> Hollywood actor. He was at the KittyHawk 100th Anniversary event on stage with all the living "real" legends of aviation and he's sitting there wearing that ridiculous uniform. It just looked like he was trying VERY hard to fit in. He's sitting next to Chuck Yeager as if to say " look at me I'm an airline captain you know" and Yeager is like "yeah right kid whatever you gotta tell yourself". Lay of the uniform a little and I'll try to respect him more. He is in a good position to do a lot of good for aviation but for know he's kind of a dbag in my book.

Don't lose any sleep over that, bro! Sounds like you've spent a lot of time up late worrying about Travolta!

I don't see what the problem is. It's a safety video...if it makes the pax pay attention, then it's doing it's job.

Add me to the list of those who do not care.

Since working for an airline I have learned that it is not something that takes years of hard work and dedication. It takes a few months of your time and a huge loan for most. After that it takes good luck and timing and the ability to not get fired or have your airline fold. When those fall into place the simple act of not getting fired over X amount of time and you are essentially guaranteed a job as a captain in the largest airframe at your airline. Now, there is a difference between a GOOD pilot and a pilot that simply passes the checks but its all irrelevant. At airline X the top two in the company that are 74 captains could be both the best stick in the universe and the worst pilot anyone has ever flown with whom everyone wonders how they have managed to not bend metal yet.

If he wants to wear four stripes and the uniform...all the power to him.

I would just be annoyed that he is wearing a uniform for an airline that would normally be reserved for someone who has worked very hard in their career to get to a place like Qantas. Then he starts up with "this is your Captain." It would be different if they threw him into a regular suit and gave a few second blurb about being a fan of Qantas safety. Lose the airline pilot guy stuff.

Agree.

John- you are not an airline pilot. When you have... 10 days off, away from home, managers crawling on your back waiting for you to screw up, whining flight attendants, flight school loans, uncertainty of your employer, stress of getting out on time and commuting, or just being employed as a 121 pilot, then you can call yourself an airline pilot.

......you forgot: and dumb enough to do it all for beans pay and lousy QOL at the regional level. :D

Did I miss something?

"Hi this is your captain speaking . . . . well maybe not today,"

No stripes, no wings, no company pin, wtf is the big deal? Qantas people thing it's "corny" omgz.

It was a cheesey safety video, but I'm not going to lose any sleep about it.

Him wearing a pilot uniform is lame as well, but guess what, he makes his living pretending to be someone he is not. So, it kinda fits.

I think the true question is, if he were a real airline pilot, would he be a professional? Would he be a glorified bus-driver?

It's not about <edited>. It's about monkey.

[modhat] try to remember when you are in the lav or not...this was not family friendly[/modhat]

1) Man do I ever not care about this.

2) FWIW, though, the way I heard it at simuflite, he CAUSED the emergency in the g-whiz by not having a clue about the systems.

3) US, a bunch of college trained chimpanzees!

Jeeeeez Louieeeeez- what is the problem with some of you people? Is it the crap economy that has everyone taking personal potshots at fellow pilots? OK- so he has a goofy religion in some people's opinion - I'm an Atheist, all religions are goofy in my opinion. I'm not in the guy's fan club or anything but I've seen him in interviews and like some of his movies.

Years ago right after I got my private I was goofing around online and stumbled onto his email address. I sent him a note that went something like "Hey I just started flying and love it too!" yada yada yada. Upon reflection I thought it sounded really kind of stupid and I wish I hadn't sent it. A week later, in the mail, I get a personally autographed color 8x10 of him and his 707(my name spelled correctly and everything). In my former career I met and knew a lot of "celebrities". He doesn't strike me as an ego maniac at all. He seems like a perfectly nice man who is just enthusiastic about flying and loves being a pilot.

Like another poster said - Lighten up.

do you still have his email address? I would like to send him an email. I will PM for why.

I did that for MikeD and others to see if they would catch the reference - sorry about that.
