JFK

ZapBrannigan

If it ain’t a Boeing, I’m not going. No choice.
If anyone hears of a good one (quiet, clean, safe, not many reserves) please drop me a note. Probably looking for around early September. 24 people in class so trying to beat the rush.

The Kew Gardens. I've never been there, but it's full of commuters. I'll try and snap a photo of our commuter board for you in JFK next week!

Thanks. Heard a guy got mugged there last week. The only crashpad I ever used was a luxury townhouse on the river in Cincinnati. I never saw another pilot when I stayed there.

Think I'm in for a rude awakening.

Kew's got some decent ones. More food around there than South Ozone as well, however the trade off is the bus ride is about twice as long to get to and from. South Ozone, you can walk it, so you're not locked into the MTA's schedule. Crashpad I was in located in South Ozone was two blocks from a bus stop, so you could walk it OR grab the bus. Note: SAME bus (Q10) that goes to Kew, but South Ozone was a billion stops closer. South Ozone, depending on the pad, are usually cheaper, too.

As for crime, I never felt unsafe in South Ozone. That being said, it's a major city, so use common sense. I grew up around the airport in Memphis (ie NOT a good area), so I have a better tuned radar for Bad Stuff, so that may have kept me out of potential issues. I've never been in a pad in Kew, but I've driven by them on the jetBlue bus as well as had the limo drivers drop some of our crews off at their crash pads. Seem pretty nice. That being said, I don't have a crashpad in JFK, MOSTLY because the MCO-JFK schedule has so much frequency I don't really need one. The nights I am there, it's normally only for about 4-5 hours, so I just nap in the crew room. Anything longer, and I just opt for a hotel. If you're looking at 3 hotel nights in JFK, it's about the same as a crashpad for the month. MIGHT be a bit more depending on the deals you get, but you get your own space.

Are there any services in Ozone? Grocery? dry cleaner? Any restaurants? Any of the hotels offer amazing deals for commuters? When you say "walk" do you mean walk to the air train? How was it when you got in late at night or had to go out before dawn?

What was the pad like? Thanks

Plenty of stuff in Ozone. There's a Key Foods grocery store on Lefferts with a dry cleaners across the street. Not as many restaurants as in Kew, but there's stuff around. Two gas stations, one with a Subway, were a short walk from the crashpad. If you wanted something better, it was a longer walk. The pad also had a car if you needed to run to Target or something like that. And I would walk from the Air Train. Get off at the Lefferts stations (big parking lot), and it was about a 10 minute walk from there. Not bad when the weather was nice. Snowing or raining? Take the bus and walk the two blocks. Never had any problems with the late night/early morning walks. Most of the time, it was one or the other rather than both.

"Amazing deals" on hotels don't really exist in NY, I think. :) Cheapest crew rate I could get was $75-89+tax.

Thanks very much! If you hear of any good deals shoot them my way. 24 people in my class so there may be a run on crashpads in a few months.

Lol... Best laid plans.

Looks like I'm BOS bound.
Can't help you on crashpads there. The one I was in I wouldn't recommend because it was too small and too expensive. I do have a number for a hotel with a good crew rate, though.

If you want JFK you'll probably be able to get it on the next system bid. Bid is in Sept, effective in March.
