NEWARK, New Jersey - A fledgling discount airline is having trouble getting off the ground.
Clearwater, Fla.-based JetAmerica issued a statement Thursday saying it's delaying the start of flight operations a month. It cited problems securing landing and takeoff slots at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
It's refunding about $500,000 in credit card purchases by more than 6,400 customers.

etAmerica had planned to offer 34 flights a day starting July 13 to Newark and Minneapolis and to underserved airports in Melbourne, Florida; Toledo, Ohio; Lansing, Michigan; and South Bend, Indiana.
Its new projected start date is Aug. 14.

That comes out to an average of $78 per customer. Yikes!

Interesting. FL's not all that busy, I doubt if there's a massive demand for capacity to Michigan and TOL and SBN, wow.

Good luck guys.

Adding capacity to FL is kind of strange being that I was able to jumpseat in and out during a busy holiday weekend and didn't have a problem getting a seat.

I probably didn't spend more than 3 minutes on either end getting thru security at PHX and MCO either.

Slots at EWR? Huh? wha?

Key #538312 that your airline is about to fail:

Blaming some nonexisting program for the delay of your launch.

TOL definitely doesn't have the need for those seats and it's about an hour from DTW. DTW has more than enough seats for both LAN and TOL.

Is this strange? I thought airlines usually didn't charge credit cards until the day of the flight or so.

The passengers didn't know they were playing the role of "venture capitalists"

This is Skybus II (or III if you count the first attempt back in the late 90s).

Despite the fact they aren't actually providing their own aircraft this time (Miami Air is) I seriously doubt they are every going to run a revenue flight.

Why not use 70+ seat RJs instead of 737-800? I'm sure it would be a lot more efficient. Plus you would lose money a lot slower.:D

CASM is pretty high, especially when you factor in purchasing your own fuel.

I guess the answer is, "it depends." Some airlines charge the card after booking, others charge near the date of the flight, and the third half charge when it's convenient (cheaper).

Credit Cards apparently tack on a ~2.5% fee to airlines on individual charges. It is cheaper to batch the charges.

Unless of course it's United who decided to push the 2.5% fee back to the travel agent who will push it back the customer.

Depends on the city pair, I guess. Most of the guys going to and from MEM are in the jumpseat most of the time outta MCO. Are you now saying the MCO-ATL isn't a "knife fight" anymore? :)
