Jet Sent to Probe Fla. Gov. Plane

Now I'm all for the media/press but had this been a light GA plane chances are it would have been written slightly differently. And chances are it would have been handled differently as well (in terms of response, FAA actions etc.).

But put the prez's brother on board and it's all "just a misunderstanding."

Riiiiiiiiiiiiight ...

I've heard a lot of people not respond to Potomac approach and they don't send the fighters up every single time. One guy got chewed out pretty good by ATC: "I've been trying to get you for the last five minutes, do you want everyone to have to clear a path for the F-16s?"

The Noble Eagle CAP is airborne 24/7 right now; a buddy of mine is flying those missions presently. He's had a few interesting stories, and has logged around 80 hrs a month since he's been out there (a ridiculously high number for the average fighter guy in a month).

You might be surprised.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I've been shadowed a few times by a Blackhawk even when I'm doing everything right!

But for the most part, if you want an F-16 escort, you gotta do something really stupid. You gotta be like that guy who wanted to land at 2W5 (Maryland) and ended up at Andrews!

Just not talking to Potomac approach like Bush did isn't going to do it.

I would hope so, but alas, lately my old profession has been dissapointing me quite a bit.

Newspapers, in general, are far less sensational than the "media" but they've even started to jump on the bandwagon.

What part of "a buddy of mine is flying those missions presently" are you having a hard time with? He's one of those F-16 pilots doing the intercepting and has intercepted aircraft for things like "just not talking to Potomac Approach".

Like I said, you might be surprised.

Well, I've never seen or heard of a single intercept and I'm sure I haven't done everything perfectly right. Besides, I thought that Customs was taking over the patrols here, and I've seen a lot of their choppers around.

In the June edition of Flight Training there is a small article about a 152 that was intercepted by 5 F-16's near Frederick, MD. The plane hadn't even violated the TFR, but it did occur on 9/10/02 with security high around the one year anniversary.

Interesting, I took lessons at the same airport (Tipton) that they took off from. Need to dig around and see which instructor it was.

I was returning to IAD a couple of weeks ago and and Potomac vectored us to the west side in order to give space to some fighters that were on an intercept. Unfortunately, it was IFR and they were on a different frequency so I never got any details.

While I was at FSA, I had a Step II student who got intercepted by an F15 on a solo x-c near The Cape. He wasn't doing anything wrong either. In fact, he was getting flight following at the time.
