Jet Fuel

I was looking for a link of what would specifically happen to a 172 engine if jet fuel was used instead of 100LL ?

Off hand, the first thing I'd say is that it won't run. The spark plugs most likely don't have enough spark in them to ignite the JetA.

Nothing would happen. Absolutely nothing.

But, you'd have to drain the fuel tnaks, drain the lines and flush with 100LL. It's basically Diesel fuel (minus a few lubricants). The DM at work runs JetA in his truck once in a while when draining of the Lears is required. But because there is no lubricants in it, it eats up injector pumps.

We had a Jet-A contamination in one of our twins. The engine temps went way up and it did cause some damage. They had to tear down both engines and replace some components.

Yep...if its all Jet A, it won't run....ever put diesel in a gas engine? Same thing. Now, if its mixed with 100LL or something else like Auto gas...depending on the ratio it may run, but you're going to see high engine temps, and either gum up the injectors/other engine stuff OR burn it up.

I remember that happening back in 2005. I recall that seminole sitting on the ramp the entire time I was at Skymates.

Interestingly enough, the King Air series has a provision in the FOM that allows for 100LL to be used for a summation of 150 or so hours before an inspection is required. "Learned that in college, college-boy?" as my father says!

The PT-6 can run off of anything really. Kerosene you name it.

Any turbine engine can run off ANY combustible liquid.

Jet A
100LL
Diesel
Regular unleaded
Everclear

Gas will burn much hotter, alcahol will burn colder.

Jet fuel, diesel, and home heating oil are virtually the same thing. Kerosene in varying degrees of purity.

In the military, it's fairly common to fill up diesel equpiment with JP. Turboshaft engines on tanks, ships and powerplants are no different from the ones on airplanes, and they all burn #2 fuel oil.

Well ya I know a turbine CAN run on anything... but my point was how neat it is that it is APPROVED to run on the 100LL.
