Jepp vs. FAA charts?

I have started my instrument and need to get my charts. I was looking at getting a subscription to send me all the updates Jepp wants 315 for their subscription. Sportys wants 6 plus shipping each time they send me a new pack of updates. Which ones should I go with Jepp or FAA? Is there anyplace cheaper to get a subscription or just buy them each time at the local pilot shops?

I'm a cheap ass so I just buy the stuff at the FBO when I need them. (preferably in New Hampshire, no sales tax)

The plates stay up to date. Sectionals and AFDs .... not so much.

I originally learned with Jepp but I've since changed to NACO charts. I like having a disposable set of plates since tissue paper doesn't last more that 58 days and I also like the thicker enroute charts. That stupidly thin crap that Jepp uses is worthless. Pull it out once in a windy cockpit and it is toast.

Plus, I don't like spending over 2x more for the Jepp!

Jepps are for airline pilots and wannabes. NACO gives you the same information. More importantly, you don't have to update them while you're checking your perm in the vanity mirror. You just get the new box full of charts and throw the old one out. Screw the rainforests.

Until someone, like an airline, starts paying for Jepps I'm sticking with my NOS charts. It's like having a VW and a porsche; one looks nicer than the other but both of them achieve the same goal. (one is way cheaper too :))

You can get a complete set of Jepps everytime too, if you are willing to pay for it.

I'm cheap and use the NACO charts. I get them loose, and put chart protectors on the ones I use a lot (which both keeps the tissue paper from disintegrating, and makes them easier to find).

I just wish the NACO binder holes were on the sides instead of the top.

The Jepps do have nicer leather binders (for $100 each)

Use whatever you are paid to use, and if you aren't paid to use either then use the cheaper. Your wallet will thank you.

i personally like JEPP format, but NACO is cheap and easy to use. i used both when training.

Is it better to buy bound or loose leaf? Its been a while since i have bought NACO's.

I like the loose ones, since you can put plastic protectors on them and they can clip easily to the yoke/kneeboard.

The bound ones are fine too, just get a big black wire clip to hold the correct page open.

Get yourself a JeppView subscription and just print your own as you need them. We've got a paperless cockpit but I still print them off for a backup.

Im lazy so I use Jepp. Easier to read, MUCH better layout. Only used NACO a couple times and the information is all there, but whoever came up with the way it is displayed was obviously not a pilot
