He is unbelievably lucky! No injuries. There are just a plethora of large shark species that are aggressive toward humans down there. Everything from Bulls, Tigers, Duskys, Great Whites, Threshers, Ragged Toothed, Silvers, Makos, and Hammerheads. There have just been hundreds of attacks in those waters to swimmers, surfers, snorkelers, divers and people just standing in waist deep water and close to 100 fatalities. There are certain areas in the region where the sharks stay around all year round too. I think Reunion down there is probably the worst for shark attacks and fatalities, though.

Damn, he is so fortunate. That great white just got on the back of his board and dislodged him off in seconds. Wilson fine too. Good thing they had so many jet skis right close by. Two sharks......... Phewwweee

I thought it was only one shark? Regardless, waking up to my social media being blown up with this was just crazy. I follow mostly everyone on the WSL tour (mainly for pictures and stuff) and boy was it nuts today. Read a few articles saying it'll be good for the WSL to get the publicity. Regardless, out of all the events I watched for some ironic reason I've never thought "I wonder if a shark will attack" ... It's like I'm so bottled up that they're in this separate area of the ocean that doesn't deal with these beasts.

Glad he's okay and major props to Julian Wilson. That's what I love about surfing. All competitive guys on boards but at the end of the day out there looking out for eachother.

"Organizers later said two sharks were spotted in the area and the same shark involved in the clash with Fanning was seen again about 30 minutes later."

Watch the video that etflies posted........the Deputy Commissioner says the same thing....two sharks.

Sharks are pretty much just everywhere. Check this out in San Diego:

Last week in Huntington, a surfer had a great white come up underneath him and bang/bump his board pretty hard. He rode the next wave right in and stayed out of the water after that and was pretty shaken up.

Maybe I was just a bit more circumspect today out at the Hook, but I am reminded that shark attacks are very rare, and that there are certain spots that are notoriously more "shark-y", J-Bay being one of them.

Here's to hoping that Mick Fanning will be OK emotionally going forward.

And when is a goofy-foot gonna win one of these things?! :)
We'll just have to save a spot for you amongst ..........................

and my personal fave, the legendary, super nice guy and incredible long boarder........ Robert August

Thank you for sharing that, Aloft.

I admire Robert August - seems like a very humble and classy individual. I met a guy in the water today, just a bit older than Robert August, who was in his 70s and going strong. He looked pretty good out there, too! Dropped in on a wave on the inside section and had a decent ride. If I live that long, Lord willing, I would like to still be surfing :)

He is one of the nicest guys you'll ever want to meet. Born and raised right here in Seal Beach. Met and spoke with him and his Dad, Blackie a few times over the decades. Bob really has some terrific stories and he's a true gentleman. Blackie was still surfing until he died at 76. Bob lives in Costa Rica now (he lived in Huntington for many years), but he and his buds still return to Huntington once in a while.

My dad grew up surfing in the '60s and '70s, which is really cool to pick his brain about. I think it's really neat that he was also a goofyfoot when he surfed (he's since switched to kayaking due to the crowds), and even though I'm right handed, bat right handed, shoot right handed, etc., I carry on the family goofyfoot legacy. ;)

He lives in Tamarindo, no? (Too bad I did not see him on my trip!)

How cool would it have been to have surfed an AM session at Pico Grande with Robert August!!

Found out from a friend in Newport that I talked to this morning (he called to see how I am doing and what year I'll be able to go surfing again-ugh - I had sent him the link for the old guys photo gallery link last night and the guy's blog) ..........that he apparently moved back to HB last fall with his daughter. I had no idea. He still goes down to Tamarindo for business though. News to me. I can't imagine why he left there. But my buddy saw him surfing in HB back in May with some friends and family. Sheeesh.........nobody tells me chit. I wonder if he'll be in HB to watch the Open.

Did you guys see Teahupo'o yesterday? Absolutely insane. Reminds me of the surf conditions in 2011 when they had to call off the day of surfing because it was too thick. While these waves always look so large to the average person, nobody pays attention to their thickness.
Check out some other slideshow pics here- http://www.surfingmagazine.com/photos/teahupoo-yesterday/

Keala Kennelly dropped into this big beast...Could see her winning the 2016 XXL award for this one...

How did someone leave this untouched? Pure beauty...

Jamie O'Brien lit himself on fire also...because someone messaged him on Instagram and asked him to do it...so I mean...why not?!

STOKED to see the boys get back to Tahiti for the Billabong Pro this year!

Skip to 2:17 for the big waves.

I've seen a lot of wipeouts, but holy bejebus! Look what happened to Niccolo Porcella. He's lucky he wasn't seriously injured or killed.

Can you imagine a fall from that height and all those tons of water slamming into you?

I can't imagine any wipeout at Teahupo'o because of that reef underneath the wave. I get scared for all the surfers that wipeout here just because I've seen some pretty gnarly injuries (not in person of course lol).

Jordy Smith cracked 4 ribs and tore a cartilage back in that same video I posted in 2011.

These waves make it easily a bucket list item to see before I die....preferably over Pipe. I just love the darkness and thickness. It's just pure beauty.

What a boss. He does so much stuff just for the fun of it. It's great.
