Making my own waves in Michigan

(I know the entry splash is poor form, but it actually is from hitting bottom in the shallows)

Where are you in Michigan? I got family in Detroit and I my flight school was west coast by St Joe(north of south bend).

Is this anywhere near the outer banks? I heard the banks can get some incredibly good surf!!! Happy to have some more east coast surfers on here :)

Duck is one of the towns on the Northern Outer Banks. OBX as a whole has really good surf for the east coast. Much better than Virginia Beach and it's only an hour and half away.

I went out this last week during the hurricane swell here in San Diego. Head-high sets, which was a good time. Definitely the biggest I've been out in. The wave was a bit too critical for me to take off on, but I got some good experience making it outside on a head-high day, plus taking the drop a couple times with hilarious results. ;)

I ended up getting a ride on that wave's reform on the inside (a bit smaller and less steep), and called it a day after 45 minutes out there. I still call it a good day with some good lessons learned.

Hey I've been there before, out in the lineup but never take anything. Mine was at pipeline though and looking at a 10 foot drop onto reef is pretty nerve racking. At least you got wet and didn't kill yourself. :)

Well, in my case I did take a couple set waves. Got pitched pretty handily off both, which is why I moved inside and then cut the session short. :)

Anyone got any good sessions in recently?

Just thought I'd share my outstanding session this last Friday afternoon/evening out at San Onofre. SD county was mostly flat, so I made the trek up to San O, which was calling 2-3'. San O has such a great, laid back culture; I love it. It never disappoints.

Old Man's was crowded, but there were plenty of peaks to spread out to. I found my own little corner, and probably caught 20-30 waves in the 2 hours I was out. It really helped me solidify my front-side turns (I'm no longer the Derek Zoolander of surfing ;)), and work out some issues I was having with my pop-ups. Really felt great to get out of the water knowing I've come a long way from my first time out.

Oh, and you know how I know I'm hooked? I'm apartment hunting down in Encinitas, just to be closer to the surf breaks. ;)

Took my SUP out and straddled the United States/Canada border in the Detroit River. Water close to Belle Isle was calm, but the closer I got to the Detroit coast, the larger the boat wake was, nearly head high at some points - but from every direction. A freighter passed by, the the random wake from other boats made it too hard to catch.

I'm relocating to LA in a few months. Can't wait to break out my prone boards.

20-30 waves in two hours is a very good session! You'll be doing floaters, punts, and connecting sections before you know it ;)

Good luck in the apartment hunt. There are some good breaks within about a 20 minute drive from that area.

This was last week by Cocoa, needless to say I got my fill and have the sunburn to prove it!

Anyone in SoCal watching the NW swell starting to roll in tonight and tomorrow? Forecasts range from 4-7' in North County SD, with the biggest size showing up later in the day.

I'd actually really like to get a SUP!

By the way, did anyone get a piece of the NW swell here in SoCal that rolled through on Tuesday and Wednesday? I actually went out on Tuesday, and it was a great time. 5-6' with overhead sets on a pretty forgiving reef break in Cardiff. It definitely opened up my comfort level quite a bit, and once I took the drop (took me a while to work up the nerve, to be honest)... Wow, what an unforgettable experience.

And @etflies totally missed it. ;)
