I play this with my kid on overnights.

But it’s not a real 25kts

When you look at the game stats you get to see how far you’ve “sailed” in the time you were alive and when you do the math you had to do something like 240kt to be able to sail 20 nm in the game in 5 minutes.

Oh yeah, it's an arcade game and lacks a lot of realism. Especially with the subs.

I've spent more money on this game than I'd like to admit, but I've got some real bangers in my fleet.

I was personally insulted when they nerfed my shotgun torpedo attack in the sub.

You have to be a reasonable player these days to play subs well.

I just got into subs and actually enjoy them. I bought Archerfish with steel and it's one of my favorite ships in the game. U4501 ain't bad either.

But yeah, there's definitely a learning curve. I'm naturally an aggressive player and I had a hard time learning that a sub alone is a sub that's not going to live very long. Sort of contradictory to real life.

I have a Balao and for the 1st half of the game you just need to scout, use the hydrophone to sniff out hidden targets and work your way behind the other side. If you get spotted early with the enemy clustered up where they can focus fire you’re toast.

Heading into the 2nd half, targets are more dispersed, probably banged up, and there’s a good chance of finishing them off without blowing cover.

I guess I’m happy that I’m not the only one who plays Warships and Tanks, mainly because because my kid plays and there were many overnights my kid and I would just play the game and talk over discord. I admit I’ve spent way too much money playing a free to play game.

I haven’t done very much with subs, and I am fairly aggressive. Taking a destroyer and rushing into the caps to take out other destroyers, or just stick to Dakaa-dakaa-dakaa-dakaa no armor cruisers with rapid firing destroyer guns being an annoying paper cut.

Ironically, despite flying planes for a living, I can’t seem to be able to fly any airplane in Microsoft flight simulator 2020. It’s at the end of the runway and I don’t have an Xbox controller so all I can do is watch the game.

Prior to becoming an airline pilot 20 years ago I used to play and fly FS9 all of the time. I’d takeoff from LA fly for about an hour, go to bed, the plane continued flying to Asia all night long, when I woke up in the morning there would be one hour left and I’d land in Asia and then go to work.
But after becoming an airline pilot couldn’t be bothered to play flight simulator.

Python? Oldster! :)

It’s had a resurgence over the past couple years. There’s a new ship coming out modeled after the “Viper” flight characteristics from BSG (run, flip, shootum-in-the-face, finish your donut style of manuevering) and in-ship combat is launching next month. Plus some of the weaponry has been rationalized. No more standing there running down some NPC’s shielding with laser/thermal weapons for (seemingly) 30 minutes and then switching to ballistic.

I logged in yesterday, built a board for my x52 setup and screwed it down, got my VR back online, and ... I swear I always forget how freaking magnificent the game is in VR.

I spent a while bounty hunting, and now I'm heading to my Power Play faction's home system. I need to up my engineering.

My gosh Elite is still an absolutely awe-inspiring experience in VR.

All the World of "X" games are way too arcade-y for my taste. I prefer the 1990s "Wolfpack" or "688 attack sub," or "Warbirds," or "Air Warrior II," though obviously all cartoony and very old-skool by modern standards.

Not that I have time for games anymore, with my schedule :(

Back in the olden times (mid to late 90s) I used to play Warbirds WWII online. I had a crappy connection and flying any kind of fighter was just frustrating. But I could fly a B-17 and I could join a squadron of other online players and participate in missions. I enjoyed doing this, almost to a fault. I recall once when I was living in a rented duplex and on a Saturday morning my squadron of B-17s had planned a mission, I woke up at 6am, made a pot of coffee, set up my ashtray and logged in. It was a big mission, hundreds of players and we set off over the water in a mass formation. At about 7:15am there was a knock on my front door, I did not need this distraction, I was a bit perturbed when I opened the door and saw my dad (he lived just a couple of miles away) and he wanted to know if I wanted to go get breakfast and hangout for a bit. I told him I was busy with this online game and maybe we could get dinner. Those missions were flown in real time and at about 4:00pm there was a knock on my front door, I opened it up and my dad was standing there wondering about me still in my pajamas and asking if I'd like to go get some dinner. I quickly logged off, put on some clothes and off we went to a local place and as we were eating he suggested that perhaps what I had been doing that day was neither healthy or productive and he was right. I stopped playing online games that day and eventually I also quit smoking. That dude smoked a pack of Marlboro reds everyday, we always had a carton on top of the fridge when I was a very young man and then one day in the late '70s he tore all of it up and flushed it and never smoked again. I miss that guy.

This brings back so many memories. If I'm on vacation long enough I will get that itch to play Flight Simulator again. I got whatever version of FS we're on this Christmas as a gift for PS5. I've yet to play it but I might on the next group of days off.
